Its me again. I bought one of those cassette converters but I just learned something valuable. It appears that the humming sound of the recorded clip is a result of the USB being used to also power the converter. While I can probably find one that has its ac power separate from the USB cable, I don’t trust myself to really know a good product. Any suggestions is highly appreciated.

why do you not play it into a program like  audacity from a mini jack out from the recorder to the mini in on the computer?

I tried the RCA jacks before but the quality was not good. I am hoping to get better quality from the USB. I already encountered a benefit in that the USB production didn’t have clicks. But it does have the hums.

I threw away all my recorders but I used the phono out to mini 9 in on the computer's mike port and I got my recordings. They were of my grand mother and my father. I do not care about songs. There is hardly a song that one can think of that one cannot find on the net or buy for cheap.

If you’re converting songs, why not just go to YouTube and download and convert them.

It is my favorite Qur’anic recitation from the eighties and I cannot find that anywhere on line. SUNY MSA used to have a copy some 15 years ago but it was only up to chapter 19. Then even that disappeared. I like this because the pace is perfect for memorizing. It is not slow or fast. In my opinion, the pace is well measured. The number of times I have tried to make a good digital copy these 20 cassettes, I should get an award for patience and perseverance. Not having it is not the end of the world but it would be nice if I am able to pull it off.

As much as I like this particular rendition, it was probably made on reused cassettes in Pakistan so the quality while very good on the cassette player does expose defects when digitally produced.

My dad had a set he used to play during Ramadan. I forgot about them. Thanks.

This rendition is Husari in tarteel. You can pick up every word really clearly. He did not rush nor drag the words. Although I got my set from Mecca in 1993, I have been listening to this particular rendition since back in Guyana. Realistically this is my taste and realistically I am closer to the grave than the cradle so it is not life or death that I convert them although I would feel very pleased if I did. My kids have not offered their opinion on what they prefer so it is not like I need to do this for them.

Kaz,

This is what you need:

Take it from the audiophile Yuji.

Django and D2 knows katahar about audio.

You are a bloody jackass. I do not know what you think you know about sound but nothing we told him means he should get poor results. Noise is because of low output levels or crappy tape. Any decent recorder can produce the best output possible. You cannot get anything better than exist in the first place.

If he is passing it into a system as  audacity he can normalize it and save it into a lossless format. That we told him the first time he came with this problem. My way means he does not spend a dime to buy and any piece of equipment that   does nothing to enhance the process.

As for sound...I am a musician and sound is what we do.

Hey, Mr. Male menopause. You know katahar.

I converted my cassette collection to digital with ZERO hum.

You sir are full of nonsense and BTW, DAC is over $ 15,000. That is the a tiny part of my audiophile gear. I know that I am speaking about when I talk audio.

Stop your BS.

I do not care to know what your gear cost. This is not about whose amp is the biggest.  No one cares about what you think you have. The man cannot get more than is on his tape. There is no technical know how to transfer that since it is voice anyways. He just has to get a good recorder to playback the signal He can do all the processing as long as he gets it on the computer.

I found this unit. This looks like it can be doubled as a tape deck as well. I recently bought an ION turntable also. I would have preferred the Denon but it didn't have the 78rpm feature as the ION one that I got. Maybe this will be a good companion for that turntable. This is quite inexpensive also (if it does as they say)

Kaz,

Seems like a reasonable audio equipment, price not too expensive.

Difficult to find top name brand,me thinks it will do the gob.My first suggestion was based on $$ in the pocket,by the way that device is powered by an adapter.

Thanks Django. This is just a project that is close to my heart otherwise I wouldn't care or invest as much time and effort as I have over the years.

I bought a PYLE console back the early 90's when I lived in Los Angeles and had it in a box in the garage with the intention of someday putting it back together. Then last year, my daughter went to a Harry Stiles concert in Boston and she got a vinyl LP with her tickets. So I took out the console but the speed was off because the elements of the garage had damaged the gear rollers, hence the purchase of the ION turntable.

But I would bet my money on a PYLE radiogram because these things were made to last. Just not when stored away in a Floridian garage.

Actually, even better. It is powered straight up like other audio devices.

I meant the one i first suggested.

The one you found looks it's powered by ac.

That's true. I initially didn't look for a DC power source because I assumed it was battery powered. Looking back at it, I see it now.

Guess who listens to his car cassette? Yep I just had on some old Los Indios Tabajaras. The trick is to toss out anything over 60mins and over.Too much tension on plastic gears and they stretch. Dah right Django our Minister within outside of the Ministry of Fixin stuff?

Those 90 mins cassettes did seem like a bad idea.

I think the shortest lives were probably the DAC and those digital Laser disks.

Hope you use a lossless software recorde. Hard drive is cheap so if you need the best quality, get a big hard drive. 4 to 6 terabyte is hardly over a hundred.

Remember you need a tool to consolidate your files. Try Media portal. It is open source and does video and audio and DVC and pictures. If you need just audio try win amp

I use Cheetah Audio Converter for this. My goal is to get a good transfer from the cassettes to the computer. I'll try again with that ION Tape2PC as I have the desire. If it doesn't work, I will put it aside and maybe revisit it as I get the desire again. Thanks.

Back to this topic. While I have searched without success in the past for the Qur'anic rendition that I prefer, I stumbled on it recently. However, one of the chapters is just over 2 hours (2:02hrs). This youtube.com converter does not convert files over 2 hours. Do you know of any converter that will work? Thanks.

Use "Audacity'' it records audio from computer, follow instructions to configure.

https://www.audacityteam.org/download/

Actually I found the whole volume on youtube and downloaded it using the youtube to mp3 converter. However, chapter 2 was just over 2 hours and couldn't be downloaded the same way. I then found a desktop version which worked. So now I have the entire volume on a flash drive. Now I just have to ensure that every word is in there and then split it up into small clips. The Qur'an has certain recitation rules which are just about 6 minutes long which would be perfect. I listened to some of it already and it sounds much better than my taped copy. Thanks Django. Thanks to Mars also for mentioning the internet as it prompted me to take another look which resulted in me finding my favorite rendition. And last but not least, thanks to D2 for all the times he has guided me through these tech challenges.
