A United States-based candidate has been appointed as the new Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Minister of State Joseph Harmon announced yesterday.

Brian Mullis replaces Indranauth Haralsingh, who had been acting in the position of GTA Director for some time.Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing yesterday, Harmon disclosed that Cabinet approved the appointment.

He explained that Mullis was selected from a list of seven applicants who had responded to local and international advertisements for the position.

“The appointment of a new Director of Tourism is part of the restructuring of the Guyana Tourism Authority which began in early 2017 and is expected to boost the development of sustainable tourist destinations, especially in the hinterland and to promote strategic marketing of ‘Destination Guyana,’” Harmon said.

When asked subsequently, the minister was unable to say how many locals applied for the position but stressed that the selection process was very transparent and lasted several months before a final decision was made.

Asked what had become of Haralsingh, Harmon made it clear that he was acting in the position and that the intention was to ensure that there was someone who was confirmed. “So everyone who wanted to be a confirmed person was given an opportunity to present themselves,” he stressed.

Mullis’ appointment follows the government’s recent approval of a US$95,000 contract to a UK-based tourism marketing consultancy. The contract awarded to Acorn Tourism Consulting Limited is for the procurement of digital marketing services on behalf of the Ministry of Business.

Who is Brian Mullis ?? Why the limited information of his background ?

Looks like firing of  an Indo Guyanese and replacing him with an Afro Guyanese.

Brian, when did you discover your passion for sustainable tourism?

I began my career working in national parks in the United States – first as a dish washer in Yellowstone, and later as a line cook and a part-time guide. There, I learned that tourism can drive the protection of our natural heritage.

Later, I owned and operated an international adventure and eco-travel company for eight years. While we

I’ve had the honor of working with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on a project in Dharamshala, India, aimed at minimizing the negative impact of tourism. I’ve also advised the Obama Administration through two terms on the US Travel & Tourism Advisory Board.

Although these were career highlights, I’m most proud of the organization that Sustainable Travel International has become. From its humble beginnings as a grassroots NGO started on a shoestring budget, it has grown into one of the world’s leading organizations focused on improving lives and protecting places through travel and tourism.

How do you know that this white man is Afro? Like the Porter brigade poisoning your mind and you're trying to appease them just to appear fair?

Brian Mullis, the founder of Sustainable Travel International (STI) and a proud father of two children from the Gambela Region of Ethiopia, in this interview reflects on over 13 years dedicated to promoting sustainability across the tourism value chain.

The PNC is saying to young, qualified Guyanese, you are Garbage, we need Foreigners to run things. This is a direct insult to all young Guyanese who study hard and accomplished their goals!!!

Nehru

It's baffling to see that the Guyana government had to reach out all the way to Africa to find a qualified person to run the tourism. Is fair to say that Guyanese cannot handle this job? Does this Mullis dude know more about Guyana than the average Guyanese? Does this guy have any relation with Exxon?
