Dear Editor,

It was widely reported that the PPP sent 17 of its members of parliament to the first People of Indian Origin (PIO) Parliamentarian Conference in New Delhi, India. This is a welcome development but it comes 75 years too late. Given the PPP’s historical embrace of communism and the Soviet Union what contribution could the PPP have made to the conference? Could the PPP really speak for and on behalf of Indo-Guyanese? What was the real purpose of the visit? To understand one must look at the anti-Indian history of the PPP and the current situation the party finds itself in.

Ever since the PPP’s founder leader Cheddi Jagan returned to British Guiana in 1943 he had embraced communist ideology and the Soviet Union at the expense of the welfare and well-being of Indo-Guyanese and all Guyana. He took Guyanese into the Cold War with his anti-USA/British posturing and his frenetic support of the Soviet Union and it led to social/racial unrest that set Guyana on a path of racial polarization and dictatorship politics. Much destruction was done to the Indo-Guyanese cause by the PPP.

Dr Jagan and the PPP helped to destroy Indian culture and values by denigrating all Indian intellectuals, degrading Hindu leadership, sending thousands of mainly Hindu youths to the Soviet Union for ideological brainwashing, and establishing a Peoples Culture Corps that promoted Russian and Cuban revolutionary songs, music, and plays. Hindu youths were gustily singing the International and Guantanamera! Indo-youths were socialized by the PPP to discard their Indian identity and culture. Indians were discouraged from engaging in intellectual discourse on ethnic issues and encouraged to simply parrot Marxist phraseology promoting working class identity. Even with the collapse of the Soviet Union and its communist empire by 1990 the PPP persisted with the communist ideology.

The consequences of failed Jagan/PPP/Jagdeo leadership are reflected in the state of Indo-Guyanese many of whom have largely descended into the sub culture abuses of rum, noise, domestic violence, wife beating, rum violence at wedding houses, drunk driving, vehicular accidents and the glorification of theft of public funds, drug trafficking, money laundering, gold smuggling, and trafficking in people. If there were any doubt of the degeneration of Indian values one only has to look at the video footage of PPP parliamentarians disobeying the Speaker, disobeying the Sergeant of Arms, and assaulting police officers in the chambers of parliament while screaming like disorderly drunks.

The consequences of failed Jagan/PPP/Jagdeo leadership are further reflected in our nasty political culture, an electoral system geared at racial mobilization, a farce of a parliament, a constitution that enables elected dictatorship, a mockery of free and fair elections and a culture of government corruption.

What exactly did the PPP delegation contribute to the conference? They could not have been telling the rest of the world how to behave in parliament or run a parliamentary democracy, how to eradicate corruption, or how to craft a constitution steeped in democratic values. They could not have been extolling the achievements, advancement, and progress of Indians after their 23 years’ reign. They could not have been talking about ethnic issues in Guyana because they never addressed such matters. The PPP’s contribution would have been zero. So why did the PPP go to India?

To identify with its electoral base and to signal to the coalition government that it has an emerging superpower watching its back. Maybe the Guyana government should hire special financial crimes investigators and prosecutors from India to complement SOCU and FIU.

Yours faithfully,

Malcolm Harripaul

Had druggie started his crime thread during PPP reign I wonder if this would have been placed there.

The PPP is a different party today and different leadership. Guyanese East Indian Hindu and Muslim unique values and unity are cherished not put down for some bag of Russian ideas that the Russians themselves do not believe in. Guyanese East Indian Hindus and Muslims must always remember that the Russians changed the name of Patrice Lamumba University to Friendship University. That is how much they really believe in what they preach.

You can count on this madman to write nonsense.  In one line he said the PPP was anti-Indian. In another line the PPP is racist meaning they are pro-Indian and anti-African.

Let Harripaul list all of the jobs that he held  in Guyana and state who  hired him.  Let's start there and then we will probe further.

How these guys never write about Granger based on leaked cables that said he was an Indian racist, and follows dictatorship ideology? Freddy Kissoon also afraid to mentioned Granger's name in his recent column in Knews. Indians brave to belittle Indians, but never a Blackman. That's why they getting kick from parliament building to the street from blackman and stay quiet.

1. Malcom was a long time member member of the PPP until he was firedso he was part of what he is now criticizing. Did he not subscribe to what the ppp stood for or is he being hypocritical? How was it he was running from the police and hiding in the rice fields near to his home when they wanted to question him about some activities he was involved in. His only claim to fame is what he got from the PPP whom he now seem to hypocritically criticize. He should be thankful to them instead.

2. None of the ppp governments have been communist governments nor were any of their policies. It will be a stretch to say that they were socialist governments.

3. Indo Guyanese, Like all working and poor people made much progress under PPP governments in all areas, including identity. Religion, education economics and social.

4,

. Malcom seems to be a dunce, or he has a short memory, or he is willing to,prostitute himself to get a job. Those of us who know Malcom know how he was connected to the ppp  and what he was involved in. The things he fought against are now being manifested again by the PNC and Malcom has lost his sense of morality abd righteousness when it comes to the pnc.

5: Malcom is acting like a jilted lover who hopes to get a step back in the door. When the PNC was in opposition he had hoped to be appointed as chief communication officer but granger told him that not enough funds for the leader of the opposition. After the election, he thought that the job was his but he got shafted and IMRAN khan got the position. He is still struggling to get his foot in to the door. I pity him!

The two rotten peas are Mark Archer and Malcolm Harripaul. Harripaul was fired by Jagdeo, because he refused orders and cuss down the then Finance Minister.

Cain, no, I am not denying that the PPP and some of its leaders did not lean towards communism or socialism. My point is that the governments headed by the PPP were in no way communist or socialist. At most, one might want to categorize the Jagan led government prior to Jagdeo after 1992 as social democrat.

Furthermore, I remind you that in the time of Cheddi and Janet Jagan going into politics and the formation of the PPP, the anti-colonial struggle was underway and then and later many of the persons leading the fight for national liberation in the colonies were propagating the β€œnon-capitalist path” to economic, social, cultural  development and colonial freedom. During that time many of these individuals and parties had close fraternal  relations with the Soviet Union, China and Cuba. If the argument is that they received aid from these countries as they struggled for national liberation and economic development, then one has to remember the context of the struggle, that on the other side of the struggle, the colonial and new-colonial powers were actively supporting repressive dictatorships and those in colonies who promoted continued colonial and economic  domination, that poverty and its associated ills were rampant for the vast majority of the peoples of Asia, South America, Central America, Africa the West and East Indies.

Even Churchill and Roosevelt acknowledged the great sacrifices the Soviet Union made in fighting and defeating German Fascism. The Germans concentrated 2/3 of their forces on the Eastern front. The Soviet Union lost almost 30 million lives.   The Soviet people took aid from America in battling the Nazis.  Maybe Harripaul should charge the US for selling out to communism during the War.

So Zed, what are these "activities "Malcom was involved in while in PPP?

You saying the PPP and especially Cheddie's wife did not lean toward Communism is like saying Nehru never uses the words Namakarram CrabDagg in just about every post. So how come the PPP were in bed with Russia and Cuba, they just loved their uniforms?

That the PPP didn't enact communism is because they couldn't.

1.  In the 60s British Guiana was a colony, so they couldn't but they received much help from Cuba and the USSR in that period.

2. After 1992 they also couldn't as the Cold War was over, Russia had abandoned its project, Cuba, and wasn't going to embark on another.

Had the PPP taken Guyana into independence they would have quickly emulated Castro.  Guyana would have suffered a similar embargo, and the Jagans, like Fidel, would have gunned down any who attempted to flee from the mess that they had created.

The PPP, until recently, boasted that they were a Marxist Leninist party and that was in their constitution.

Yet within the English speaking Caribbean it was the Jagans who most loudly screamed Marxist Leninism with a doctrinaire ideological alliance with the USSR.  Norman Manley, Eric Williams and Errol Barrow, all also involved in the anti colonial struggle, didn't embrace Marxist Leninism.  It is to be noted that tiny Barbados with nothing, has an economy many times the size of Guyana's.

They loudly condemned US intervention in Vietnam but said NOTHING about intervention by the USSR in Afghanistan.

Prashad will never insult a man like Harripaul. He is an inspiration to the East Indian people of Guyana .  A lone East Indian soldier surrounded by an anti koolie military.  Nehru continue with your neemaKaram insults against the man and I going to give your rural pandit behind a stray dog wiping when we cross paths.

Bill Bal.  The Soviets lost millions of people during the second world war not because they were anti- white and believed in equality but because the Germans never accepted them as Aryan brothers.  When the Germans invaded the Soviet union many Soviet citizens greeted them as liberators.  It was only after they realized that the Germans had rejected them and saw them as a non-Aryan slave people that the Soviets started to fight the Germans.
