Shariff Bacchus, aka “choka dhall”, the prime suspect in the Meadow Bank wharf murder of Chan Wen Wong was on Monday morning hauled before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and charged with the capital offence of murder.

Bacchus being led to the lockups

The forty-two-year-old fisherman of Albouystown, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which was laid by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan; detailing that on July 20, 2017, he unlawfully murdered Wong.

The seemingly calm Bacchus was ordered to return to court on August 14.

Meanwhile, Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that the post-mortem examination results are still outstanding.

INews had previously reported that on the day of Wong’s death both parties were engaged in a heated argument which quickly escalated into an altercation. Fishermen in the area reportedly parted the combatants but as Wong departed; Bacchus reportedly rushed behind the now deceased man with a sharp object and dealt him a blow to his chest before escaping.

The injured Wong was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

When this publication visited the Lot 14 Seaforth Street, Campbellville home of the deceased, other tenants related that he had worked at the Mei Tung Restaurant as a cook for quite sometime, before later branching out into the fishing business. He and several other Chinese nationals had rented the house, but none were at home at the time.

The Chinese had reportedly arrived in Guyana as a child, leaving his parents back in China, and was known as “chiney man” at the Meadow Bank wharf.

Wong was described as peaceful and helpful individual.
