A man from Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice is in custody, having confessed to killing his wife and burying her body in their backyard, police say.

Mother of four Lilwantie Balack, 39, of Lot 117 Mibicuri North, Black Bush Polder, was last seen during the last week of August, 2016.

Since then, her spouse, Sunildat Balack, 45, had been giving conflicting information on her whereabouts, including the claim that she had left the country. But according to Com-mander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam, the man told investigators that on September 6, 2016, he and his wife had an argument, which became physical.

Amsterdam said the man claimed that he choked the woman until she died and, in an effort to cover up his crime, he buried her body in their backyard. Accord-ing to the Commander, the man told investigators that he and his wife argued over her wanting to leave the country, which he was against.

Police cordoned off the Black Bush Polder property last evening and they are expected to conduct a search today.

Lilwantie Balack

Lilwantie’s eldest daughter, Darshanie Devi Balack, 20, told Stabroek News that she last saw her mother on August 27, 2016.

Darshanie, who resides with her husband at Friendship Village, Corentyne, said that on September 6, last year, her father went to her home and informed that her mother would not be at her wedding and then he left. She noted that on the same day, he told her siblings and other relatives that their mother “fly out.”

“…He give everybody different, different direction,” she said. “First, he tell us that my mother is at Cane Grove… He tell my brother at 66 Village [Corentyne]. When I ask my grandmother, she say she is at Mahaicony,” the young woman related.

According to her, her father had told her brother that someone had picked up their mother in the night. “So them ask he if somebody come pick she up she na carry none clothes or nothing. He tell them that the people them wah pick she up bring clothes and so for she,” she said, noting that all of her mother’s belongings were still at her Black Bush Polder home at the time of her disappearance.

Sunildat Balack

According to Darshanie, although her mother had previously visited the United States, the only relative over there is an uncle. “She na deh with me mamoo [uncle]; he deh looking for she right now,” she said.

The woman said that her parents would fight but would usually make up afterward. “Them does fight and suh. He used to hit she but them use to solve up the problem them self,” she explained.

However, she noted that her family’s suspicions grew when two months after her mother’s reported departure, her father took home a new woman.

Darshanie noticed that the woman, who is 21 years old, was wearing her mother’s wedding ring. “I can watch the ring and know is my mother ring, it fade out and so,” she said, while noting her surprise that her father was in possession of the wedding ring, since her mother would never take it off.

That man looked like cured ham...from rum. That is the Indian disease. I do not know why the so called concerned humanitarians do not address that disease. Everything in Guyana is organized around rum. It is a rum culture no less than vodka is for Russians with no less devastating effect.

Things have to be hard that the parents of a 21 years permit their child to go off with that clearly looser looking fellow. She is his child's age and from back channel he is a wastrel.

I would be the first to acknowledge the same disease in Amerind communities. You, on the other hand, know Indians, especially those like this fellow, are chronic drinkers. Indians in general do have a rum culture. Everything involves organizing around drinking.

Piwari is a beer. Alcohol is a distilled product. The first is 5 to 11 percent alcohol. The latter can range from 40 to close to 80 percent alcohol. Bushrum is even worse. It may be composed of methanol as well as ethanol.

Under the PPP they did the same. Some 34 women were mudrered in 2014 in domestic violence. I see people here clamoring that gyana is a middle income country but this speaks of a backward nation where there is a fractured cultural life that shows little respect for family cohesion. It is practically the same for both groups where extra maritial affaiss is a badge of honor and where women get little respect. Most guyanese men do not help out in the kitchen or with household chores. Last year one man chopped his wife to death because his food was too cold!

Gruesome find on Black Bush farm… Cops dig up missing wife’s remains from 6-ft. deep grave

By Malisa Playter Harry

Sunildat Balack and wife Lilwantie

Shackled and emotionless, 44-year-old Sunildat Balack watched as police dug up the skeletal remains of his 39-year-old wife, Lilwantie Balack, from the six-foot-deep grave in which he had buried her eight months ago.
Police unearthed a skull and a few bones at around noon, after two and a half hours of non-stop digging in an area about 100 metres away from the Lot 117 Mibicuri North, Black Bush Polder home in which the couple had lived.
But they found no clothing with the remains, and this indicated that the killer dumped his victim naked into the makeshift grave he had dug on his two-and-a-half-acre farm.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that DNA tests will be conducted for positive identification.Detectives were later seen gathering the bones into a container before taking them away. Balack was then escorted from his farm to the Whim Police Station. The farmer’s 21-year-old lover, who had moved in with him, remains in custody. It is still unclear whether she played a role in the killing.

Divisional Commander Ian Amsterdam, who was on the scene, told reporters that, “we recovered bones and skull. He (the alleged killer) gave us directions to where the remains were (and) we will also be using video analysis for evidence.”

Ranks from B’ Division, their colleagues from the Major Crimes Unit and Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh, were all on site.

From as early as 08.30 hrs, villagers, family and friends gathered at the area in anticipation of police recovering the remains of the woman, who some described as “quiet and reserved.”

Some of the curious lined the street and even climbed nearby trees to get a glimpse of the gruesome scene. Some shed a few tears when the remains were eventually brought to the surface. Overall, though, there was a sense of relief that the fate of the woman who had vanished eight months ago was finally known.

Police said that Sunildat Balack, also known as “Red Man,’ had confessed on Friday to strangling Linwantie Balack, called ‘Darling,’ and burying her in the family’s backyard. He had reportedly committed the act on September 6, 2016, when the couple had argued about her wanting to go to the United States.

A female neighbour, who lives at an adjacent lot, said Lilwantie was a quiet person who seldom left her home.

“She mostly used to deh in the garden with she husband, but he is a kinda hot-blooded type of man andhe does drink plenty,” the neighbour recounted.

The grave

According to the woman, Balack ventured overseas sometime ago and returned, and had indicated during a conversation that his wife would also be “going and take a walk.”

He had later indicated that “Darling’ was overseas. The neighbour said that during that time, Lilwantie’s husband would occasionally visit her home.
“He always come over and we does laugh and talk and me does ask he how long ‘Darling’ gone for, and he tell me three months, and he can’t say exactly when she guh come back, but she go with visa and she have to come back.”

Just about three months ago, the suspect brought home ‘a girl’, and he told neighbours that “Darling nah come back, she tek somebody over deh.”

According to neighbours, he had often attended the Mandir with Lilwantie and the couple’s three children. They expressed shock that he had allegedly committed such a brutal act.

While some were suspicious, most had apparently concluded that ‘Darling’ had indeed left her husband, and had started a new life overseas.
Lilwantie Balack’s horrible fate only came to light on Wednesday after her daughters, who had become increasingly suspicious about their father’s conflicting stories, contacted the police.

“When I ask my father, where is she, he give everybody different direction. First he tell us that my mother is at Cane Grove; he tell my brother she at 66 Village (Corentyne), and when I ask my grandmother, she say she (the mother) is at Mahaicony.”

According to her, the father told her brother that “Somebody come pick up she (the mother) in the night.”

“So dem ask he if somebody come pick she up, why she nah carry none clothes or nothing; he tell them that the people dem wah pick she up bring clothes and so fuh she”.

She also said that on September 6, last, her father told them and other relatives that their mother, “fly out.”

She explained that her mother had visited the US prior to September 6, and had stayed with her uncle, their only US-based relative.
“She nah deh with me mamoo (uncle), he deh looking fuh she right now,” the daughter had recounted.

Two months after they had last seen their mother, her father brought a woman to their home. According to the daughter, her father claimed that he had known the woman for seven years. He then presented his 21-year-old new partner with a wedding ring, which the daughter recognized as her mother’s.

This shaman thinks he knows it all. He should address the rape and impregnation(in Guyana) of 11 years old in his culture. Incest is rampant in the buckman reservations. A lot of crimes that are committed in greater Guyana(outlying areas) go unreported.

Guyana is my country and my culture. You do mot get to speak for my paternal great grandfather who ambled all the way from Amristhar to indenture himself in guyana. I do.

I do not know what eleven year old you sprak of but one would hope if I did not you had the courage to voice your outrage.

Incest is, acording to the people who deal with this one of the contributive factors in high suicide in indian communities also. Every year over 3000 young girls under 16 leave school because of pregnancies. The PPP minister of education,s office - Plumpy M, noted a significant proportion of them are victims of rape and incest.

They defy logic because you would be hard pressed to be logical. I am merely reporting a self evident fact. Indians in Guyana maintains a rum culture. Very few would deny that. It was recently noted in a US publication; 15 year olds say the drink more than  twice a week and adults almost every day.

I am sure I grasp more profundly the idea or "perception" and "reality"; both very problematic if one is a dunce like you. That I hate indians will not acrue to fact because repeat that or because you deny the obvious.

Suspected remains of Mibicuri woman found buried in backyard

-after husband leads cops to grave.

Source

Skeletal remains, suspected to be those of Lilwantie Balack, were yesterday found buried in a farm behind her Black Bush Polder home, where her husband directed police after he reportedly confessed to strangling her.

Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam told Stabroek News that parts of a skeleton that were recovered would have to be sent for DNA testing to confirm whether they belong to Balack, 39, also known as ‘Darling,’ who has been missing since September 6th last year.

After digging for over two hours, lawmen found the remains buried in the two-and-a- half acre farm behind the Lot 117 Mibicuri North, Black Bush Polder home that the woman shared with her husband, Sunildat Balack, 45. Both he and his recent live-in girlfriend remained in custody up to yesterday at the Whim Police Station. A team comprising the division’s top investigators and members of the Major Crimes Unit is spearheading the investigation.

As police removed the remains yesterday midday, scores of persons who had gathered, including relatives and neighbours, were seen shaking their heads in disbelief.

Amsterdam said that with the suspect’s direction, the policemen were able to discover the remains, which were buried some six feet deep. According to him, no other item was found among the remains.

On Wednesday, with the guidance of the Prime Minister’s representative in Region Six, Gobin Harbhajan, Lilwantie Balack’s eldest daughter, Darshanie, filed a report at the Whim Police Station.

Darshanie, 20, had told Stabroek News that on September 6th, last year, her father visited her home at Friendship Village, Corentyne and informed her that her mother would not be able to attend her then upcoming wedding, since she had left the country. She noted that she believed her father since she was aware that her mother was the holder of an American visa and at that time she did not suspect that her father would have any reason to lie to her.

However, Darshanie became suspicious after her mother did not make contact with her after several months passed, while her father’s explanation of her whereabouts continued to change. “…He give everybody different, different direction. First, he tell us that my mother is at Cane Grove… He tell my brother at 66 Village [Corentyne]. When I ask my grandmother, she say she is at Mahaicony,” the young woman related.

According to her, her father had told her brother that someone had picked up their mother in the night. “So them ask he if somebody come pick she up she na carry none clothes or nothing. He tell them that the people them wah pick she up bring clothes and so for she,” she said, while noting that all of her mother’s belongings were still at her Black Bush Polder home at the time of her disappearance.

Darshanie said that her family’s suspicions grew when two months after her mother’s reported departure, her father took home a new woman. Darshanie noticed that the woman, who is 21, was wearing her mother’s wedding ring. “I can watch the ring and know is my mother ring, it fade out and so,” she said, while noting her surprise that her father was in possession of the wedding ring, since her mother would never take it off.

After Darshanie filed the police report, lawmen swiftly took Darshanie’s father and his girlfriend into custody on Wednesday afternoon.

Sunildat, a farmer, is said to have cracked on Thursday evening, when police say he confessed to investigators that he was responsible for his wife’s disappearance.

Amsterdam had confirmed to Stabroek News that Sunildat admitted that he and his wife were involved in a heated argument that became physical. He said the man told investigators that they argued over her wanting to leave the country, which he was against. He said he choked the woman until she died and, in an effort to cover up his crime, he waited until nightfall and buried her body in their backyard.

Darshanie had told this publication that her father and mother would often fight but would normally settle their issues on their own. “Them does fight and suh. He used to hit she but them use to solve up the problem them self,” she explained.

‘Live good’

Scores of residents of Black Bush Polder and surrounding areas on the Corentyne gathered around the Balacks’ property, which was cordoned off by police, to witness the dig for the suspected remains of the woman. Those gathered stood, sat and even lay on the dams despite the intense heat yesterday morning.

Among them was Lilwantie’s father, Chattergoon Budhram, also known as ‘John’, 69, of Lot 649 New Scheme Chesney, who rushed to the grave after investigators left the scene. The man, who recently suffered a stroke, could barely walk but he traced the path, crossing over a single board, to reach the location where his daughter was reportedly buried. He told Stabroek News that he was sad at the situation. “She is a kind person, she always come and talk and mix,” Lilwantie’s stepmother added.

Chattergoon Budram

One neighbour, Gowmattie Edward, 46, of Lot 101 Mibicuri North, stated that the couple used to “live good.” She then added, “The man is a kinda hot blooded man when he drink, he don’t really talk, talk to people.”

According to the woman, she has never witnessed the couple fighting. “She don’t go nowhere alone; anytime them going out is the two of them together,” she, however, added. “The man is a kinda man like that—he don’t want he wife go people place and, so, most time she deh home.”

Edward noted that the husband and wife would usually plant on their farm together. “After a sudden so, them two went New York, then them come back and then he alone go back and when he come back he said he wife would a go back and take a walk,” she related. “We hear he daughter get married and me ask he how was everything and he said everything went alright but he had to act father role and mother role and then me say where she deh and he say she get through and she gone, that he go spend some time with he children them, let she go walk and we never see she back,” the woman added.

She further noted that the man kept extending the date when his wife would supposedly return from overseas.  She added that she asked again how he was making out and he said he would bring nephews to live with him as he could not live alone. She said he also mentioned plans to once again go overseas.

“But after one good while, he come with another girl and then he say he wife na come back, she take somebody over deh,” Edward added, before breaking into tears. “I sorry for Darling. She been quiet and hardworking. She alright. I sorry for she because it could happen to anybody. I never expect this man to do this cause he did talking so nice to people and so,” she said.

Relatives and neighbours, when asked if Lilwantie ever complained to them about her marriage or her husband, said no and pointed out that they always seemed happy together.

Lilwantie Balack is the mother of four children.

This is a case of a older man going mad for a young woman whom he took right after allegedly murdering his wife. They should question the young woman that he tek up to see if she pressured him to get rid of his wife.

This is not a case about alcohol as I noticed that some posters are making this out to be. They need to stop labelling all Indos as rum suckers.

Quote from the article:

"However, she noted that her family’s suspicions grew when two months after her mother’s reported departure, her father took home a new woman."

"The farmer’s 21-year-old lover, who had moved in with him, remains in custody. It is still unclear whether she played a role in the killing."

Some men need to resist temptation, some young women can trap them like a fish in a castnet.
