BREAKING NEWS! Sean Hinds surrenders to police

July 27, 2015 | By | Filed Under News
Sean Hinds

Sean Hinds

Self-confessed ‘death squad’ Sean Hinds today surrendered to police in the company of his attorney.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had said that Hinds was wanted for “a serious offence,” while declining to disclose the nature of the offence. He had also urged the embattled former ‘hit man’ to turn himself in.

Indications are that Hinds was wanted for questioning in connection with alleged surveillance he conducted near the home of Prime Minister and First Vice President Moses Nagamotooo.

Nagamootoo alleged on Tuesday, July 14, the security detail attached to his home noticed a strange car parked close by. He alleged that Sean Hinds was identified as the occupant of the car, and that the occupant of the vehicle sped away as the security staff approached.

Hinds has denied this claim.

But Hinds has been spilling the beans about the work of a ‘death-squad’ which he said was set up to target criminals who were  behind a spate of killings following the February 23, 2002 Mash Day jailbreak.

He claimed that the ‘death squad’ worked with members of the Police Force and he was among members who uplifted arms from CID Headquarters, Eve Leary.

Sean Hinds turns himself over to police

Accompanied by Attorney-at-Law, Nigel Hughes, self-confessed member of a death squad and former murder accused, Sean Hinds turned himself over to law enforcement on Monday afternoon, moments after Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan issued a call for him to do so.

Dressed in black t-shirt and denim jeans with dark shades and a cap, Hinds walked briskly into the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Force with Hughes at his side. He had wanted to surrender to the police since last week but News Source understands, he could not find a senior Attorney  who was willing get involved in the matter.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed to News Source that Hinds is custody and will now be questioned with regard to a “serious offense”, he is believed to have committed and also questioned about his recent confessions about being a member of a death squad that was responsible for the gunning down of a number of criminal suspects and other persons.

During an interview last week with the HGP TV Nightly News, Hinds confessed that he was a member of the death squad that operated during the 2002/2003 crime wave. He said without the squad, Guyana may not have survived the onslaught of criminal activity during that period.

He claimed also that the operations of the squad was supported by the Police Force and that he was provided with guns and instructions from senior police officers at the time.

While admitting that he was a member of a death squad, Hinds has distanced himself from the March 10, 2015 murder of political activist, Courtney Crum-Ewing.

Ramjattan urges Sean Hinds to turn himself in, but makes it clear that nothing will be offered

The Public Security Minister wants self confessed death squad member, Sean Hinds to turn himself over to police for questioning but declares nothing is in it for him.

Ramjattan urges Sean Hinds to turn himself in, but makes it clear that nothing will be offered

Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan has made a personal appeal for self confessed Death Squad member and former murder accused Sean Hinds to come out of hiding and submit himself to the police where he can be thoroughly interview on recent revelations he made during a television interview.

The Minister believes that this will be helpful if the police were to probe the allegations made by Hinds, where he can be recorded officially at the police headquarters.

But even as Ramjattan made the appeal, he is insisting that no one, who is involved in criminality, will be given a “free lunch” in Guyana. Not even Sean Hinds who many believe may be helpful in helping the police to crack major cases that have gone cold.

“We would like to see him give an official statement and be interviewed thoroughly by the police about everything he knows. It is not the best to just give a police interview, it is also important to give a police interview,” he added.

Over the past few days, Sean Hinds has been appearing on the evening newscasts distancing himself from the murder of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing, while admitting that he was a member of the death squad which is believed to be responsible for the gunning down of a number of criminal suspects during the crime wave of 2002/2003.

To this end, Ramjattan does not believe there should be any special arrangements for Hinds who is also to have been directly  involved in the crime spree and murder wave that sweep the country after the 2002 jail break.

“What’s got to be in it for him? So if he murdered we must allow him to get off with that. Look we are a very serious administration and we are going to take care of all those who did what wrongs they did in an earlier period,” Ramjattan reasoned.

He said discretion must be used to get as much information as possible from Hinds but explained that the state will not grant amnesty before he gives the police an official statement.

“If he wants to confess to his involvement and what he knows let him come and that will be decided later.”

The Security Minister admitted that there was a role for plea bargaining in this matter but said it is a determination that the Director of Public Prosecution would have to make.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had confirmed that Sean Hinds was wanted by the Police for investigations into a “serious offense”.

It was later revealed that Hinds was allegedly spotted carrying out surveillance of the private residence of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo.

Lets be real....why would this man incriminate himself and expose those who could potentially kill him without  some plea bargain on the table. Kemraj need to shut up and let the prosecutors do their thing. He should not constrain their hand.

I agree. He should seek outside help.... like a special Prosecutor from the Islands or UK and even help in the interrogation process.

Asked about Hinds' claim of making numerous appearances at Freedom House; -one as recent as last week- Rohee said, "I saw him (Hinds) here (at Freedom House) sitting waiting to see someone," but he did not ask him who he was waiting for. - From dem waves.

Mr. Granger and Mr. Ramjattan this is exactly why you need to pull in Anil Nandlall, Rohee, Kwame, Jagdeo and even Donald Ramotar and question them at CID HQ to get answers on the record from them.

Hey, I did not follow this thread.  He does need protection and the police is the correct place.  He worked for the police it seems in some "contractor" capacity.  That's a matter for the police to address, not the PPP.  It will lead to nothing against the PPP.

The police expect him to give them a detailed statement on the operations of a death squad during the PPP reign, that he claimed he was a part of during the mid 2000s.

don't use terminology u don't properly understand fool

u looked up the meaning of "The Hague Convention" yet?

FM

The PPP wanted "one more assassination" to try to create a racial riot. A black man shooting an East Indian PM. That was sure to make big news. The PNC would have been blamed, just like when the PPP assembled the Fineman gang to scare Indos.
