Based on the discussin we were having here it looks like Debedin started the Apan Jhaat, not Rai as I think was concluded in that thread.

That was not the conclusion of the thread. Debidin was the one who started apan jhaat at bottom house meetings, speaking in Hindi. Rai may have used it but was not the originator. Jagan was complicit because he never discouraged it and benefitted from it.

Okay, I thought the conclusion was Rai.  Anyway, Debidin statrted that in 1953 when Jagan and Burnham were still together.

Yes. My essential point on that thread was that racism in Guyana vis a vis Cheddi and LFS was started by racist indians. Many educated Indians actually supported LFS.

I was told by my father that the much hated Hamilton Greene witnessed apan jhaat first hand. Greene's father apparently organized one of these public meetings for Debidin. Debidin shows up and urges indians to vote race in Hindi. I wonder what effect that had on the younger Green.

I doubt Debidin had any blacks around to help him  Here is another section:

Racists in the NDP and the LCP also attacked the PPP claiming that Indians dominated it and that Burnham and other African leaders were being used to win African votes. On the other hand, racists in the UFWP and the British Guiana East Indian Association claimed that Dr. Jagan, by having Africans in the PPP, was selling out the interests of the Indians

Before the East Indians could vote in British Guiana, the franchise was afforded to the Blacks, Coloureds, Europeans and Putagees. There was fierce canvassing of the votes. And each of these ethnic(tribal) group appealed to their OWN.

Before the East Indians immigrated from the plantations to the town, villages and city, prejudices were well entrenched in the society. The East Indians simply follow the pattern of ethnic identifications in the creation of the BGEIA. Similar to the LCP, the Marcus Garvey Organization for Universal Blacks association with Ethiopia, the Putagees and the Chinese.

It was always a call to vote for your own. It might have been give an Indian name when the East Indians participated into the already racially charged society.

We the East Indians, are culturally a different ethnic group. Definitely, not Euro-centric. And easily marked for discrimination. A human nature. Easily practiced among tribes of the same race of people, muchless in a society of six different races of people.

It is much more easier to legislate laws than the efforts of changing attitudes. Racism and prejudices will never be stamped out of societies. Not until Christ returns.
