Stop using jumbie; fear of black man – Nagamootoo

Prime Ministerial candidate of the APNU-AFC coalition, Moses Nagamootoo is calling for an end to race-baiting and using the “jumbie of fear of the black man” going into the May 11 elections.

Speaking on the radio programme Hard Talk aired on 90.1 Love FM on Sunday, Nagamootoo said regardless of individual race, “we are all Guyanese” and should see each other as such. “We need to send positive messages to our supporters and in fact all Guyanese. We have to learn to live out the creed of who we are; we are Guyanese and we are not Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Chino-Guyanese, Amerindo-Guyanese…we are Guyanese. If you go to Trinidad you find Trinis, Jamaica, Jamaicans so we don’t have to emphasise our difference, we have to live with who we are and try to be able to understand the concerns collectively that all of us need to see our country move forward.”

The coalition PM candidate said as a politician he cannot identify any group or block of parties that requires damnation. “I believe that the PPP would attract sufficient votes to be respected after the elections even though it will go into the minority and in the opposition. I believe that the five parties in APNU combined with AFC will win a handsome majority but it will come from all sections of the Guyanese people. We must not go there appealing to their racial or prejudicial side. Appeal to their side that tells us we have an angel inside all of us that could do better if we allow it to do better,” he stated.

Concern remains about the resurfacing of racial animosity, particularly between blacks and Indians in some sections of the society at elections time. Some believe these sentiments are fuelled by the nature and tone of political campaigns which, in the past, seemed to focus more on race than on issues affecting Guyanese.

“We want to say that there should be no violence in the elections. We should have an end to race-carping and perhaps still using this jumbie; the fear of the black man because when we go the United States, we don’t ask who is Obama, whether he is black, blue or green. When we go to Suriname…Guyanese go there and they can live with Bouterse, or they go to any of the Caribbean islands…they run to countries that are literally ruled by black people so I don’t think that we should carp on this issue of race,” Nagamootoo said.

He stressed that a better system of governance is what the focus should be and more inclusiveness for young people going into the elections. Nagamootoo said he is offering a hand of friendship to all the political parties, even before the elections, to let them know there is room for all in the coalition.

Nagamootoo was appearing on the programme at the time with Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran

That's Moses our healer and statesman, with a real Jaganite heart.

David is like that too.  So let's move Guyana forward!

Let's be strong and throw the rascals out of office.

The more you people call Moses a "Jaganite", the less I wanna support him.

I don't want Jaganites and Burnhamites.

Let us be done with these two daags already. It's 2015.

No bai. Jaganite means coolie auntyman who made Indians wait out the Cold War for their right to vote.

That's Jaganite.

Jaganite is also bequeathing to Indians and Guyana a Stalinist political party grounded in "democratic centralism" which is a fancy word for dictatorship.

Jaganite and Burnhamite are two sides of the same shyte stained coin.

Fear is a subjective thing. It can be overcome where there is a will.

The so-called Indo-Guyanese fear of Afro-Guyanese, which politicians have exploited and manipulated for 60 years, must be confronted head-on.

Personally, I have never been afraid of Afro-Guyanese. I grew up near them at Uitvlugt and we got along fine over the decades. During the racial disturbances 1963-1964 there was blood and bitterness, but over time the relations became normal again.

Of course, every race in Guyana has its fair share of bigots but thankfully they are not in the majority.

Other AFC-APNU politicians would do well to pick up where Moses left off and spread the message that Indo-Guyanese must not be afraid of Afros.

Gil,

It's not as simple as "coolie man frikken black man."

It's far more complex than that. I think you have many Indians who remember post election violence.

That is the common thread in conversations with Indians. No fear. Not Burnham. Not aloo and roti.

It's the still justified anger over post election violence targeting Indians. Not targeting the PPP. Not Ministers. Not the President. But ordinary Indians for being Indians.

This is why I can't talk to most of you Coalition goons. Ayuh run to play propaganda games with people. Save that nonsense for Councie.

I'm just articulating a fact that Indian People hold the PNC responsible for 1997, 2001, and then Buxton. Period. You can throw in all them other coolie bandits you like. But the narrative here is one that is distinctly anti-PNC from the collective Indian standpoint.

You can prattle all you like. I don't care about the individual issues with this narrative. The Indian People believe it and act accordingly and you and your nuancing ain't gonna help that.

I understand your point, sir.

I also understand that the PNC conducted an honest assessment of their post-elections protests from 1992 through 2001 and concluded they were counterproductive. The also noted that their demonstrations were infiltrated by agent provocateurs suspected to be paid by Freedom House.

The 2011 post-election APNU marches were free from attacks against Indians. In fact, Rohee's police shot and wounded blacks in that demo, including an ex-army chief.

Late last year David Granger made sure his APNU protests were small and manageable, to avoid infiltration by troublemakers.

i am sure that Shaitaan knows this . . . which is why i question his motives

whythe hell do you think kwamee and lumumba types have become so valuable to the PPP?

David Granger is acutely aware of this danger, which is why he has sanctioned only very narrowly circumscribed demonstrations as Gilbakka has noted . . . to the consternation of many well-meaning (non-violent) opposition supporters who nevertheless prefer a more muscular approach

Hey Parosin,

1. I've always liked the word "goon" for some reason. It's a personal joke. I don't expect you to understand. It's not meant in any way as an endorsement of Councie. But I can see how you got that impression. I just like the word goon is all.

2. I'm not hiding behind what "the Indian People believe." I would be happy if the Coalition came to power in this election. I'm coming around to it. Not because of the AFC or Moses or Nagamootoo or Vice Presidencies these people will get. It's because I personally like David Granger and I trust him enough to give him a chance.

This is in spite of the fact that I'm still pretty goddamn annoyed about the post election anti-Indian violence since 1997 linked to the PNC. It feeds into this narrative of a general hostility to the Indian presence in Guyana I don't even want to believe exist in the hierarchy of the PNC, our main Opposition party and the principal Black nationalist party.

I have my political directions which shift with changing circumstances. I'm not a party man. My beliefs do not shift. I want a Guyana that is fair to all its citizens. Black, Indian, and other. I want the race wars over. My principles are yours. They are Anglo-American. Pretty standard.

I do however try to understand the sentiments of Indians and Blacks who don't share my experiences and certainly my liberal and rational outlook on politics. I must try and understand the average Indian and the average Black because they're the majority. I know enough to know that I am not the majority. Indians are now an incredibly diverse people. We are no way near some monolith.

Just look at Cobra and I here. Cousins and we're poles apart politically.

Bear with me at times. I display a lawyerly ability to see things from multiple angles. Not some attempt to deceive. This you can see as I am trying my best (successfully) to swallow the Coalition for the greater good of all of us, in spite of the fact that in some ways some rather naughty people will be rewarded for doing some very naughty things on the strength of General Granger's coattails.

that [absurd] narrative thrives, in part, because people like u who should know better succor and water it

there is much complexity here

please see Gilbakka's response regarding the POLITICS of post-1997 elections violence and my reply re kwamee and lumumba dem

further, your characterization of the PNC as a "Black Nationalist" party is provocative and inaccurate

indeed, the PPP may have hard core race ideologues on board, but it would be equally inaccurate to characterize it as an "Indian Nationalist" party

Mr. Ramakant:

A recent column from Mr. Seeram on Moses Nagamootoo being a candidate for president as “ambition” shows how very little he knows Bro. Moses.

Moses is not a fly by night politician; he is a tried and tested leader and has been a warrior for the working class. Moses was there for us when we needed him most. At a time when being associated with the PPP meant unemployment, starvation and suffering at the hands of the PNC, Moses was there for us. At a time when your life was in danger from House of Israel thugs and PNC terrorists, Moses was there for us.  There are many in the PPP cabinet now with no history of working class struggle or standing up for the masses.  What did people like the famous Chatree, Ashni, Sam, Jagdeo, Manickchand, Jennifer, Norman, Juan, Carolyn, and Robeson, know about working class struggle or fighting in the trenches for the people.  In thick and thin, Moses was there with Jagan and the working poor.

I remember when news would come to Berbice from Georgetown (not many phones in those days) that Moses was beaten again or harassed by the PNC mafia, Moses’ mother, the kind-hearted Auntie Chunoo from Whim would cry and say, “Me no know wha Moses ah kill he self behind Jagan.”  But that was Moses. He was willing to risk his life and family interests for the working people.

Moses is not and never was an opportunist.  When Chandisingh, Teekah, Harilall and others crossed the floor, Moses stayed with Jagan and the suffering masses.  He and others “stood in the Gap” for the nation until democracy was restored in 1992.

I remember in the 1973 elections, it was Moses on election night battling it out with the PNC people exposing the rigging of the elections by the Army.

When the PPP (Jaganite) begin to lose its way with the death of the Jagans, and started to depart from the ideals of Jagan, it was Moses (and Ramjattan) who blew the whistle, and eventually left the PPP (Jagdeoite), when it was no longer possible to change the now bourgeois, parasitic PPP.

Moses is a decent person, with a long record of defending the people.  The PPP are terrified of him because, Moses has credibility and knows how to handle the Jagdeoite crowd.  With Moses as part of the AFC team of Bro. Khemraj, Nigel and Trotman and others, they have brought the now corrupt PPP to its knees.

Seeram is a smart man and should know better than trying to vilify Bro. Moses, one of Berbice’s pride and joy.

Sincerely,

Jay Bharrat

FM

Nagamootooo is saying indirectly and appealing to the blacks not vote for the racist PNC.  In his heart he is still a ppp bhai. He is using all the information he gathered when he was an Information Minister against the PPP.  This is what he does best.

R

Ram:

Moses is a PPP Jaganite. The PPP you and I love is the PPP Jaganite not the PPP Jagdeoite.

We have to help the working poor understand there had been different PPPs. The current PPP taken over by the Jagdeoites, is not the PPP we are proud of.  This is the parasitic, new bourgeoisie made up of contractors and business people.

Moses is Jaganite in heart, and wherever he is in whatever Party or coalition, his Jaganite values will shine forth.

I am one of those who regard Jagan as a god, but the PPP of today is not Jagan's party. Ask Jagan's children, ask Ram Karran's children.

That's the point.  The PPP's strong points are also its weak points.  They have used the projects as the mechanism/pretext for taking kickbacks, bribes, steering contracts to their new parasitic bourgeoise friends, and essentially farming out and divvying up the spoils of the country to their co-conspirators.

The money from the projects did not trickle down to the working poor, who still catches hell on a daily basis.

And Ram, that's because your Jagdeoites, have not held local govt elections in decades and there is no local govt anymore; that's destroyed.

So there is  a low level of rate collection, the rates assessed are too low to pay the overseer and office staff, etc.

The Jagdeoites are too busy figuring out how to set up their scams and what next resource to target, and that's why they neglected all the things that are important to the working poor.
