“It’s something that we are trying to cement in terms of community and family and grassroots development. This is one of the events where we have all three of those components within, that why we call it Digicel triple treat. It involves the 10/10 knock-out cricket; the curry duck competition and the stage show.”
It was further revealed that the Curry Duck competition and the Stage Show where the company is hoping to have an international Artiste are slated for the semi-finals and final of the competition which would be played on Sunday April 22nd at the Anna Regina Community Center ground.
With a total prize package of One Million dollars up for grabs in the cricket competition, Das noted that they want to make it a lot of fun with preliminary matches set to be contested on the Perseverance Beach.
He informed that registration which can be done electronically, via Digicel’s facebook page or by filling out forms that would be available at Digicel Stores along the Coast, will start from this Saturday.
“It’s an event that Essequibo Coast looks forward to every year and our phones begin to ring as soon as the year starts. In the previous years we have had in excess of 20 teams each year and we are trying to grow that also to try and reach that 30 team mark in this third year.”
The competition proper will bowl off on Sunday March 11 and is expected to attract mostly home teams even tough teams from outside the jurisdiction are welcome to compete for the spoils but will be responsible for making their way to and from Essequibo.
GFSCA President Ramchand Ragbeer in his remarks expressed appreciation to Digicel for its continued partnership towards the development of the sport noting that this particular event, the ‘Triple Treat’, has been very popular on the Coast for the past three years.
Baksh, the main organiser on the ground for the association in the County, stated that the competition would be the regular 10/10 with a twist: “With the big white ball, that’s the only difference, regular no LBW and regular cricketing rules. The teams in Essequibo, they know what to look forward to.”
There would also be weekly prizes for centurions during the competition, while there would also be prizes form the man-of-the match and man-of-the series. The Digicel Store at Anna Regina and Speed Talk located at Charity will have registration forms available.
The period for registration is February 17 to March 8, while action gets started two days later.
Sanichara reminded that the event on the final day, April 22nd, is designed for the entire family where they kids would enjoy bouncy castle and face painting among other attractions.
Admission to the venue and to enter either the cricket or duck curry competitions is absolutely free. The top four persons in the curry duck competition would be rewarded handsomely.
“This is just an event for the community to benefit and for our brand to be behind that community. We’re not gaining anything but good bonding and community development with the people in Essequibo,” Sanichara reminded.
