Non-adherence to COVID-19 measures could result in prosecution – Health Minister

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, MP, is reminding members of the public that they could face prosecution if they are caught breaching any of the COVID-19 protective measures.

During his COVID-19 update on Tuesday, Dr. Anthony said persons who should be in home isolation after testing positive for the Coronavirus, but are still out in public could be charged.

“For you to come out of home isolation, you need to be cleared by one of the doctors in your region. So generally, once you’ve tested positive, we wait for about 10 days, after those 10 days, once you don’t have signs or symptoms over the last two, then you can be discharged. Some people observe it in a very strict manner, others don’t do that,” Minister Anthony said.

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, MP

He said with such non- adherence to the COVID guidelines, cases will continue to increase in the country.

“If they’re not observing it [home isolating], then we can easily have more spreads. If people are irresponsible, and don’t abide by the rules, then we’ll have an increase in spread.

“Under the orders, we have specified that if you are not obeying these rules, then you can be prosecuted.” Dr. Anthony noted.

Section 16 of the Official Gazette published on September 4, states that any person who tests positive for Coronavirus and is identified for quarantine shall; (a) comply with all applicable directions given and requirements imposed by the Health Emergency Operations Centre, including home isolation or quarantine or placement in an isolation or quarantine facility; and (C) not knowingly expose themselves, without proper or necessary precautions against spreading the Coronavirus in any public place or to any person.

Statistics on Monday evening showed that 3,505 people across the country were in home isolation, while another 160 were in institutional isolation. Minister Anthony said institutional isolation is being offered in every region for persons who are unable to isolate at their homes. Meanwhile, the record late Tuesday afternoon showed that 348,534 or 67.9 per cent of the adult population have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while, 179,965 or 35.1 per cent of the adult population are fully immunised. Another 20,896 persons or 28.7 per cent of the country’s adolescent population have received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

I'm in agreement with this and not only Covid but any flu like symptoms. Anyone coughing, runny nose etc should stay the rass home. I had a manager who was oh so proud she could work while sick, while others around her took time off. Little did she know she was the cause of them being sick.

Instead of retreating, the virus is advancing and rapidly

Dear Editor,

I have looked for ways to support the government’s handling of COVID-19.  It has not been easy, because of stubborn resistance to some areas that I think could have made a difference.  But recent developments now guide me to share publicly where I didn’t want to go before. I think that the government has lost full control of what is under its hand.  This is compounded by its reluctance to take advantage of other means that help us best battle this virus.  The facts are as follows: 1) number of deaths rise relentlessly; 2) number of new infections increase alarmingly; and 3) the number of ICU hospitalizations cause the distressing. Addition-ally, Delta (and other) variant unknowns have backed us into a corner, which is not helped by obdurate unvaccinated citizens, and citizens who continue settled ways (socializing etc.), like in pre-COVID-19 days.

Further, government has been steely against partnering. It costs us now, because politics on both sides intruded, locking in a vise.  Nobody will let go, even as more and more Guyanese are going down.  Talk about togetherness here to combat the existential threats to Guyanese life to give us a fighting chance to emerge better, and it is treason.  The 2021 flood came (the worst national disaster of all, according to no less a person than the nation’s first citizen), but it is gone.  The PPP Government went about it alone, with pieces still being picked up, even by those who profited handsomely.  The Venezuelan menace reared its ugly head, and then retreated sullenly.   Tem-porarily.  Again, PPP leaders decided on a solo approach, while it hopes for the best; so also do all Guyanese (I think).  The third existential threat front and center in this country is this viral pandemic, for over a year and a half now.  But the difference on this occasion, is that it is not going anywhere.  Instead of retreating like floodwaters and Venezuela the virus is advancing and rapidly.

Sincerely,

GHK Lall

I've been following this. There are a significant amount of vaccinated folks dying. It's either because this sputnik is shit or maybe the delay between doses or not getting 2 full doses renders the vaccine useless.

Guyanese "leadership" (and I use that term loosely) is incapable of handling this. Guyanese in the homeland are sitting on a time bomb.

They should also show other deaths and not just Covid.

I find it amazing that during Trump's time in office, everyday they showed how many got infected due to some rally or other. Now with all the games being played with huge gatherings with many not keeping their distance nor wearing masks, we hear nothing. I don't believe no one is contracting Covid.
