1823 Monument to be built on Carifesta Avenue

The contract for the construction of the 1823 Monument base was awarded to Nabi Construction and the contract was recently handed over by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony .

The base for the 1823 monument and the garden site for the accommodation of the monument will be located on Carifesta Avenue opposite the Guyana Defence Force ground. The cost or this project is over $26M.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony

speaking about the 1823 Monument

The 1823 Monument was sculpted by Ivor Thom after he had won the free and open competition organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. The construction of this unique monument is an important aspect of the national commemorative activities for the 2011 UN International Year for People of African Descent.

This Monument will be erected in recognition of the historic August 1823 Revolt by enslaved Africans which occurred on the East Coast of Demerara. They worked on the sugar plantations further revolting against their enslavement and were killed.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony

hands over contract to the Project Manager/Engineer

of Nabi Construction Inc, Sean Cox in the presence of

Permanent Secretary Alfred King and other officials

Minister Anthony said that the Ministry is extremely pleased to be able to move forward with this project, noting that it is very significant to people of African descent

The construction of the monument’s base will be completed in four months.

It seems as if the AFC is trying to score political points on this announcement.

Build the Monument. What is so wrong about recognizing an important historical event in Guyana's History ? We must preserve and celebrate our rich history.

The idea is excellent. It was this revolt that caused the English ppl to get an informed opinion on what took place in Demerara with the revolters. It was the beginning of the Abolition of slavery and the introduction of the Indentured Labourer-the first being the Apprenticed Africans in British Guiana.

Had it not been for Reverend John Smith's incarciration by the Governor and mysterious death. The London Missionary Society and William Wilberforce would  have been unable to lobby the English ppl for them to send petitions to the House of Commons.

Quamina Gladstone was the moderate and staunch Christian. I hope the monument includes Quamina, John Smith, John Wray and Quamina son & Gladstone.

The timing was so perfect, without any hitch, the East Indian landed on the shores of the colony. Desperate and displaced through the practices of the East India company, they had to go somewhere.

I am glad the emancipated ppl rushed off to city and created vacancies on the sugar plantations. A hard life, but in the end a whole lot better that being CASTE in a miserable existence.

We live better.

If you believe this is an excuse for the PPP to steal taxpayers money, then it's good to continue stealing. Remember the story with God and Satan. Satan said to God no matter what Good I do, I will never get thanks for any. That's why he remain the prince of darkness and let God take all the thanks and praises. So, let the PPP steal and build the country.
