Breakfast: The most important meal of the day, or so they say. While a typical yogurt with fruit and granola is always a respectable start to your mornings, sometimes you just need to treat yourself.

So we’ve rounded up some of the most scrumptious breakfast sandwiches across Canada that require both hands, and an eager morning appetite.

Big T’s BBQ: Breakfast Sandwich (Calgary, AB)

If I could shout from the rooftops about how amazingly tasty this breakfast sandwich is, I would. With a few locations in Calgary, you can find this English muffin breakfast bite at any of them, but I find it most delicious from Big T’s BBQ at the Calgary Farmers’ Market. Tender smoked beef brisket with egg, cheese and any of their house-made barbecue sauces is a recipe for success. Adding sliced pickles and a little mustard is not required, but it really puts this dish over the top in taste.

Carousel Bakery: Peameal Bacon Sandwich (Toronto, ON)

Not the most innovative or groundbreaking AM meal, but Carousel’s peameal bacon (egg optional) sandwich is probably the most famous. The classic breakfast has been prepared at this food vendor in Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market for over 30 years, and has been eaten by a myriad of celebrities (food and otherwise), including Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse. If you’re spending a morning strolling throughout the market, this is definitely what you should be eating.

The Coastal Cafe: The McCoastal (Halifax, NS)

Even though it’s named the β€œMcCoastal,” this breakfast sandwich has little in common with the famous fast food item. The Coastal serves up a toasted English muffin filled with apple sausage, creamy Havarti cheese, house-made red wine onion ketchup and maple mayo for a mouth-watering, albeit, slightly messy, morning meal.

EVOO: Breakfast Sandwich (Montreal, QC)

Only serving brunch on Sunday mornings, you’ll to have to wait all week to try EVOO’s breakfast sandwich. A toasty warm English muffin joins forces with a fried egg (obviously), house-made pepper sausage and cheddar for a filling breakfast complete with a side of hashbrowns. It’s almost like the typical fast-food sausage and egg on an English muffin grew up and got a little class.

Jam Cafe: The Gravy Coop (Victoria and Vancouver, BC)

With people lined up down the block most mornings at its original location, Jam decided to bring the popular spot to Vancouver as well. After opening a few months ago, Vancouver’sJam Cafe is equally as busy, serving up big plates of food for breakfast and lunch. The buttermilk biscuit sandwich with scrambled eggs, tomato jam and cheddar cheese is tasty enough, but if you aren’t counting calories, go for The Gravy Coop: a buttermilk biscuit is topped with fried chicken, house sausage gravy and two sunny side eggs. You’re welcome.

Krafty Kitchen: Dizzy Rascal (Kelowna, BC)

Krafty is known for its lively hip hop brunch with a fun food menu almost entirely named after famous rap artists, and a lively playlist to go along with it. The β€˜Dizzy Rascal’ sandwich comes stacked with fried porchetta, eggs, house-made sauerkraut and mayo. It’s always a hit. Equally satiating is the β€œStraight Outta Compton” burger. A house-made patty, house-cured bacon, fried egg and aged cheddar. It’s in a bun, so that’s basically a sandwich, right?

Lazy Daisy’s CafΓ©: Rise & Shine Breakfast Sandwich (Toronto, ON)

When it's time to rise and shine, head over to this cute cafΓ© for your official wake-up call, which would consist of a warm latte and a buttery biscuit sandwich. Lazy Daisy serves up their sandwich consisting of a fried egg topped with crispy Mennonite bacon and white cheddar on a freshly baked biscuit. It's just as easy to eat one-handed on the way to work, but if you have a little time to spare, you might as well sit down, relax and enjoy.

Local Public Eatery: Fried Egg Sandwich (Various Locations Across Canada)

This gastropub chain now has eight locations across the country, from Vancouver to Toronto, each with its own customized line-up of microbrews and wine. Local’s brunch menu remains the same across the country, which is nice because it includes this greasy spoon-inspired breakfast item of griddled sourdough, fried eggs, cheddar and crispy bacon. It pairs perfectly with one of their spicy Caesars, especially when you’re hurting a little from the night before.

Miss Browns: Sausage and Egg Roll on Brioche (Winnipeg, MB)

Always a fantastic little spot to grab a well-made coffee in Winnipeg’s Exchange district, Miss Browns is just as apt in the breakfast department. Try the sausage and egg sandwich on brioche with their house-made barbecue sauce, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. (PS: although not a sandwich, the shakshuka here is unreal, too.)

Siegel’s Bagels: Breakfast Bagel (Vancouver, BC)

Siegel’s Bagels shells out some delicious bagels in Vancouver’s iconic Granville Island Market every day of the week. Really hungry? Go for the everything bagel with shaved Montreal smoked meat, egg and cheese for a meaty morning start. If you’re not an-eggs-for-breakfast sort of a person, try Siegel’s’ Double Cheese Melt: Swiss or cheddar is melted over a bagel and filled with any of their flavoured cream cheeses.
