I respect Trudeau however he got it all wrong when it came to this issue.
1. The Mexican government has hijacked the term "immigrant" and now uses it almost exclusively to mean "undocumented migrant" the vast majority of whom are Mexicans. This population is lucrative to Mexico with remittances used to sustain populations and to build and maintain social infrastructure in remote regions. Mexico wants them to remain in the USA, but ironically doesn't want them to be legalized as they fear that this will reduce their bonds to Mexico.
2. As a result many who are undergoing "Anti Trumpitis" and who had nothing to say when the "Deporter in Chief" Obama tossed out more undocumented migrants in his first term than Bush did in his two, are now misinforming people as to what is happening.
3. I am willing to bet that the undocumented migrant population in Canada is almost nonexistent so when Canadians (undergoing their own "Anti Trumpitis") scream how "anti immigrant" the USA is they are being hypocrites. Canadians have no tolerance for undocumented migrants and have a far more onerous system to determine how legal immigration works so they are the last people who should be complaining about US immigrant policies.
The result of this is that thousands of Haitians were told that Canada is more immigrant friendly than is the USA so they fled to Canada.
Well Canada with its fast self should be forced to admit everyone of these 60k Haitians who will soon be displaced.
