 I do not see any way the ancients could have reasoned as Turing did. They did not have the intellectual tools. Digital computation was outside their conception. Further, their cultural disposition of defining natural phenomena in terms of the supernatural could not have envisioned artificial intelligence. We can tall of this later.

 

As for "other scenarios", none existed that could have helped the fighters identify where the u boats were lurking at a time when they needed it most. These planes were at the edge of their capabilities and by hiding just beyond their range and destroying merchant cargo at will in the middle of the Atlantic would have broken the American capacity to sustain the loss. The losses are in the record,  Being able to locate these Uboats by breaking their codes was propitious. It changed the outcome of the war.
