I read in a book that Burnham US foreign currency squeeze was so bad that he had to send physical Guyana gold to pay government employees at overseas embassies. He eventually took the US foreign currency of Guyanese insurance companies to pay for foreign imports (probably from the Soviet block) that could not be payed in Guyana gold.
