Veteran filmmaker and father of Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, Ram Mukherjee died on Sunday. He was 84. He was battling illness for sometime and breathed his last at 5 am on Sunday.

Rani Mukerji’s mother shared the news of her husband’s demise, “His blood pressure dropped suddenly and he was admitted to Breach Candy hospital where doctors declared him dead at 5 am. He was doing fine earlier and this was sudden.”

Ram Mukherjee worked in Hindi and Bengali Cinema. He was one among the founders of Filmalaya Studios in Mumbai. Mukherjee was well-known for making films like Hum Hindustani (1960), which featured Sunil Dutt, Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh in pivotal roles. He also helmed Dilip Kumar-starrer Leader in 1964. Rani Mukerji’s debut film Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat was helmed by Ram Mukherjee in 1997.

Rani, along with husband Aditya Chopra, was present at the last rites at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle West here.

Actors Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor and Ranveer Singh were among the others who came to pay their last respects.
