Volda Lawrence arrested as electoral fraud probe continues

Chairperson of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) – the largest party in the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Coalition – was taken into Police custody today as the investigations into the activities following the March 02 General and Regional Elections continues.

Lawrence, the company of her attorney Nigel Hughes, turned up at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after she was invited for questioning in relation to the part she played in the elections.

While there, she was taken into custody and remains detained.

Hughes who told reporters that Lawrence was arrested in relation to the activities at the Office the Returning Officer for Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) where attempts were made declare fraudulent results for that district.

Lawrence was supposed to report to the CID on Monday but requested to do so today instead.

Since last Saturday, Police had asked that she present herself with respect to the allegations against her but this did not materialise.

The Police Force is currently probing allegations of attempts to rig the March 2 elections after receiving formal reports back in August.
