Pirates attacked at least seven fishing boats and badly beat several fishermen badly during the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday morning but the prospect for justice appeared slim.
Chairman of the Berbice Fishermen’s Coop Society, Indarpersaud Rampersaud said the hijackers beat the fishermen with cutlasses and pieces of wood.
The incident occurred offshore a place named Shell.
Rampersaud explained that the pirates, suspected to be fellow fishermen, stole fuel-leads, fish glue and catch. None of the engines, he said, was stolen.
Rescuers rushed out to sea after the crew of one of the pirated boats managed to improvise a fuel lead and sail to shore. The six other boats were found adrift off Nickerie, Suriname.
A number of the beaten men, who bore cutlass-lash marks on their backs and lower limbs, were x-rayed, treated and sent home, the Fishermen’s Coop official told Demerara Waves Online News.
At least 30 men endured the ordeal that last from around 1 AM to 3 AM. Asked what action could be taken, Rampersaud noted that little could be done because the perpetrators are widely believed to be fishermen.
“Nobody wants to go and give evidence because they frighten,” he said.
