the person would have been referencing genetic contributions to their identity as a human being and not to nationalism which speaks to culture. Ethnic Germans also include people in Switzerland, Luxemberg, Austria, Liechtenstein, among others. Even that is not sufficiently grounding since Germanic is more than German speaking people.
