President Donald Ramotar, whilst participating in the Ministry of Tourism’s annual event on Main Street, ‘Main Big Lime’, said that the objective of the event was accomplished as it created a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for patrons.

“The atmosphere created is lovely with people relaxing and enjoying themselves together,” President Ramotar said.

The Head of State also said that the Main Big Lime is an extension of Christmas as the Christmas season is a time which brings people and families together as such communities come out and enjoy themselves together.

Because of this the Main Big Lime has now become a signature event on the list of tourist activities as it has grown popular among Guyanese residing overseas, who only visit for the season.

“It encourages Guyanese residing abroad to come home…it is another event they can look forward to, coming home for the holidays…it will pick up more in the future as it has the potential to become bigger,” President Ramotar said.

Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali, acting in the capacity of Tourism Minister said “the staff would have done a good job as the time for planning and marketing the event was limited”.

Ali also mentioned that the focus of the tourism sector would see more private/public partnerships like GUYEXPO and Building Expo which serve to further boost Guyana’s tourism industry.

“There are lots in store for the tourism industry as many opportunities exist…the industry can be built around the cultural heritage of the Country using activities like MASHRAMANI and other such events,” Minister Ali said.

The event which proved to be an overwhelming success despite inclement weather, attracted hundreds who came out to mingle, lime and have fun.

Boots were erected on the avenue of Main Street by Guyana Tourism Authority and local Producers of Arts, Crafts and beverages. Other booths erected provided children with the opportunity of participating in games for toys.

The annual event is aimed at promoting the Guyanese unique culture, while providing tourists and citizens with a spectacular occasion to have “reunion” every year.

This is according to many overseas-based Guyanese who spoke with the Government Information Agency, during the event which saw the participation of several arts and craft booths showcasing Guyanese culture and heritage.

President Ramotar during first walk-about at the event as Head of State took the opportunity to greet participants.

The first Main Big Lime was held in 1999, with specific emphasis placed on promoting Guyanese tradition and culture.
