Guyanese and Garbage.

OK Folks,

Politics aside, I was shocked to see what a single household puts out for Garbage in Guyana for one pickup day:

Garbage-4-300x200

I remember visiting GT when I was very young and it was squeaky clean with Burnham riding on his horse along an avenue that I cannot even remember the name of it.

If memory serves me right, there were also prisoners cleaning and weeding under the watchful eyes of policemen. I will come back to this later.

I don't know about where you live but in the City of Vaughan where I live, you are allowed only two garbage bags and additional bags have to be paid for. In addition, we have different food bins. Left over food goes into a separate Green bin with fruits and vegetable peels. We also have a blue bin for recycling paper and other recyclable products.

The optics of Guyanese putting out garbage without any regard for the environment and ZERO recycling scares me. What are officers of political office doing about this ?

I was horrified to see in NYC that a similar approach to garbage applies with zero recycling. What kind of world are we leaving for the next generation and what examples are we setting ?

Why can't prisoners assist with cleaning up of the City in GT as they did in the past ? This nastiness and disregard for the city and its cleanliness is not a PPP or a PNC problem but it is a Guyanese problem.

I was horrified during my last visit to see littering and foam cups and plates plus plastic bags everywhere. The problem is not confined to GT alone. Skeldon market which was squeaky clean when I lived in Guyana is no different than GT. The canal beside it is blocked with plastic cups and plates, plastic bags and all sorts of Grabage.

What is wrong with our Guyanese people ? Have they no regard for cleanliness and Mother Earth ?
