And the British didn't leave that much. Their interest in British Guiana was pulling out sugar and bauxite and only had infrastructure to support that. Cheddi gets credit for opening up secondary school education beyond the few who were wealthy or bright enough to win scholarships. Burnham continued by expanding physical infrastructure and expanding secondary school education into the rural areas.
