The busy area turned into chaos at about 20:00h when the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately before snatching an undisclosed sum of foreign and local cash from the money changers.
Fortunately, no one was injured, although the area was crowded with commuters.
An eyewitness told Guyana Times that the money changers are lucky to be alive since the bandits opened fire without care.
According to the eyewitness, the gunmen were well organised, knew their targets and planned their escape route.
When this newspaper arrived at the scene, several Police Officers had already cordoned off the area and were picking up spent shells. Investigations are continuing.
