Girl, 11, with COVID-19 succumbs

An 11-year-old child who tested positive for COVID-19 died yesterday.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that the child died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she was being treated for another illness.

A source told Stabroek News that the girl was tested on last Wednesday and her results were received on Thursday, when it was revealed that she was infected with the virus. It is unclear whether her death will be treated as COVID-19 death as it is possible that she may have succumbed to another illness.

The Ministry of Health had yet to confirm her as a COVID-19 fatality up to last night.

Guyana’s COVID-19 fatalities officially rose to 134 on Friday as three new deaths were confirmed on Friday.

This was revealed by the Ministry of Health, which confirmed the three new fatalities as a 74-year-old woman from Region Ten, a 56-year-old man from Region One and a 58-year-old man from Region Four. According to the Health Ministry, all three persons died while receiving care at medical facilities.

Stabroek News had previously identified the 74-year-old woman as Moblissa resident Estella Williams, who succumbed on Thursday at the Wismar Hospital in Linden.

Meanwhile, some 64 more COVID-19 cases from 281 tests were confirmed on Friday, thereby increasing the total number of confirmed cases in Guyana to 4,457. Of the additional cases, 54 were recorded in Region Four, seven in Region Three and one each in regions One, Seven and Ten.

According to the Ministry of Health COVID-19 dashboard, up to yesterday there were 11 patients in the country’s COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, while there were 844 active cases, 770 of which are in home isolation and 74 are in institutional isolation.
