Historically, from around the 1840's, Canada heavily assisted the African slaves who were fleeing the US_of_A.
They were protected in Ontario, the largest part of Canada where they crossing-into and indeed numerous were brought to Alberta where they was placed in various towns in the northern region.
As referenced on threads for this topic, the Africans lived comfortably in various locations. Over time, they became well established in personal and private businesses plus in the private and public sectors.
