investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
He reportedly had several bruises and marks of violence about his body,
Rozan, 38, a bus driver, was detained on Tuesday following a report of damage to property against him. After police officials visited his parents’ home at Hague Backdam to deliver the sad news, the man’s father along with other relatives requested the body for burial, and upon inspection of the body it was discovered that there were several black and blue marks and bruises, along with the fact that he was bleeding through the eyes.
According to the dead man’s father, Abdul Majeed, a post mortem will be done today.
“The police told me that while my son was locked up at Parika he hit his head on the lock ups bar and he became unconscious. But when me and my relatives go to the mortuary it was clear it was not any knock on the head that was responsible. There were lots of marks of violence on his body.”
Majeed who is also a Rural Constable over a decade explained, “This morning (Yesterday) when I went to Leonora lock ups. I made three requests to the police. I wanted the commander and the rest of the police to visit the mortuary to have a look at my son’s body. Secondly, I want to go into the lock ups and see which part they claiming that my son knocked his head and kill himself and thirdly, I want the commander to identify the police ranks who arrested my son and take him to the station, so I can look them in the eyes and ask them if it was necessary to arrest my son.”
Police had disclosed that Rozan was arrested and taken into custody at about 21:10hrs on Tuesday February 24, following a report of damage to property that was made against him. The following day he was found alive but lying on the floor of the lock-ups.  He was then taken for medical treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigations are being conducted by the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
