The PNC boys busy preparing for the Jubilee Celebrations on one hand and they cannot control the bandits from scaring folks who want to go back.  Another failure added to the list.  Guess the crime chart is growing rapidly, so that needs to be shredded.

My family and I stayed at this hotel 2 years back, it is beautiful.   Glad I took my kids to see my birth place since we probably will never go back now.

Guyana's been destroyed by the AFC/PNC in less than one year.

Crime, murder, rape, corruption and the destruction has just began. I spoke with many Indo Guyanese who are afraid to visit Guyana.

These shameless skunks like Rumjattan should be fired immediately.

The incompetence of this administration is unbearable and the Guyanese population will eventually push back.

I cancelled plans for visiting in the summer of this year. Who wants to visit a murderous and racist country ?

The nation is traumatized by this new surge in crime and further aggravated by a government that is releasing criminals and talking about being more lenient in sentencing the very few who are caught and convicted. In other words, if you committed a crime that carries a sentence of 5 five years this gov't. would see that you are given 2 years and then be entitled to a presidential pardon after serving 1 year.

I guess criminals are dying to run out of the country and ply their trade somewhere else. Guyana is no longer a good fishing ground for criminals.

The new surge in crime started under the PPP watch when your hero Jagdeo decided that Cocaine is a good export commodity for the nation. He turned a blind eye to the drug barons, many of them PPP supporters, and the drug trade flourished, bringing with it guns and violent crime. We now have junkies walking around in every community looking for the next fix and feeding their habit by being involved in criminal activities.

The Camp Street prison is designed for 600 inmates and it is currently  housing 1000. The PPP had no vision to build additional prison facilities so Camp Street is dangerously overcrowded and is on the verge of exploding. There are no violent prisoners in jail for five years being pardoned so give us a break with your sensationalism. In order to ease prison overcrowding, non-violent prisoners are being assessed and if they are fit for early release then they are being released. There is no space to house non-violent offenders who have been jailed for possession of a marijuana joint and who've already completed most of their sentence.

How come the PPP are angels in your opinion when in fact their primary function no less than this administration was property and person protection of citizens? The PPP, by the way, tried to build manythings that are a burden on us. Sparaandam stelling is still not functioning after three rebuilds exceeding the budget many fold, the cable run lost us 35 million, the Marriot is half build even after spending tax payer money in secret. The Amalia road was slated for 15 million and despite knowing Fip never built a fowl coop they give it to him anyway. It ended up costing 45 million. The Berbice river bridge is still the most ugly thing ever built. I  it neglected pedestrian ramps. The government put up 90 percent of the money and give it away to cronies,  and yet it is the most expensive crossing in the free world.  Then there is the matter of the 250 million white elephant in skeldon. What did they build again that actually worked as designed and within the budget as stated?

They present government is following the path of the previous government. George town is small some 15 square miles with fixed outlets  and yet these brazen robberies continue.

The police should not be sitting in stations. There should be a fleet of squad cars on patrol with flashing lights in every quadrant of the city at every moment. A pair of beat cops should also be on the ground with designated coverage so the can observe what is going on directly and apprise others of on going suspects or criminals in the area. A robust 911 system should be established with response time being immediate. Each beat cop and patrol cars should be interconnected  and each should be reachable in real time. These cops should be able to check license on the fly and request identity checks also.

These are the immediate requirements but none of these are being addressed. The same system with lazy cops in stations responding when they see fit and no accountability exist.

Do what the PPP FAILED to do and that is to professionalize the police force and make the courts more efficient.

In addition new criminals, and those arrested for non violent crime, shouldn't be housed with violent criminals, and should be equipped with literacy and job skills so that they can fit in, once released.

In addition there should be community based policing.  Crime will be reduced when a preemptive, and not a reactive approach is used.

The police need to know who the bad elements are, where they congregate, and what they do.  Only contacts within the communities can assist them with this.

The police need also to improve their detective work. I was told that they don't even know how to preserve the crime scene, so that evidence, needed for forensics, is contaminated.

Then they need to learn how to offer evidence in court, to assist the prosecution in locking up the criminals.   This is especially important when powerful people are arrested.

And all this comes to nothing if the massive gun trafficking continues unabated.  Are the para militias still around? Who is supplying the guns?  Do the police know?  Bet you not.

Right now, nothing will stop crime completely so it's a matter of bringing it down to a manageable level. Increased patrols and roadblocks would help. More policemen are being hired but it takes a while to get them through training school and on the job. I would like to see patrols stepped up in villages/rural areas and the response to crime by the police has to be improved tremendously. We can't have citizens calling 911 and the police showing up half an hour later or telling the people that they have no car to come to the scene of the crime. That is unacceptable. Money has to be spent to acquire more patrol vehicles. We also need policemen on foot and motorcycles patrolling through the business areas, Regent Street, downtown GT, near the banks, etc. They are no good sitting in police stations waiting for something to happen. Get out in the communities. The army also have to work with the police, throwing numbers at the problem. Also the drug problem needs to be tackled. Bring in some of the known drug barons and find room in the prison for them or turn them over to the US DEA. We have to invest in treatment centers for junkies. More decent paying jobs for young people and facilities for sports activities. Youth unemployment is a serious problem in Guyana. A holistic approach has to be developed to make a dent in the crime situation.

Why don't you explain to us why the crime rate has increased so high since the new gov't. took over.

Because being a PPP propagandist, you peddle this lie over and over, hoping that it would stick. Crime spiraled out of control in the PPP era and hasn't changed much since. According to police statistics, serious crime has fallen 14% in the first quarter of 2016 compared to 2015 under the PPP. Just on the basis of following crime reports in the media and talking to people on the ground in Guyana, April's numbers look the same as 2015.

Who dead, dead. Bandits having their freedom for independence as Granger promised. Remember what Granger told Guyanese in the Caribbean? Come home and be rich, Guyana is ours now. Let's take back what is ours. Burnham also said to his disciples, you work for the gold and Indians wearing it. Go and take it back.

Remember the black fella who robbed and raped a granny? He yelled, Granger, help me, as he was taking to court. That sends a bad signal to a quack head of state.

This is good for all you neemakarams. Criminals are running Guyana now. Take a look at the prisons, they are run by inmates.

Welcome to Granger Guyana.

Does Freddie Kissoon monitor crime statistics? Was there zero crime when the Coalition Government assumed office? Did the current crime situation happen in a vacuum or is it because of the out of control crime left in place when the corrupt PPP were kicked out of office? All these are questions you should ask yourself before spreading PPP propaganda.

Knucklehead,

You will not win this argument if you keep blaming the PPP for the crime rate and not look at the stats so far.

I agree that its too soon to stop crime that was high also during PPP time, but crime has also been high since this govt took over. They campaigned on a promise to reduce crime. So how much longer do we need to give them? 6 more months?2 years?

My older brother wants to go to Guyana but he cant because he is afraid of being targeted as an American with money.

This high crime is not going to help the economy banna....it already having an impact on a lot of people who want to go to the 50 year celebration.

I just came back from Guyana and I had no problem with anyone trying to rob me or kill me. Many places are sold out for the 50th anniversary celebration. Tell your brother to stop being a coward and just go. Take the necessary precautions and he's gonna be fine.

Most crime in Guyana are setup, if you keep your mouth shut and don't be too flashy, you will have a good time in Guyana. We should only worry if we see a systematic targeting of visitors. Recently the pnc said they broke up the airport gang. But family are the biggest culprits of setup robberies. If you can, stay in a hotel, you are much safer if your family are needy and susceptible to setting you up.

Because the PPP failed to professionalize the police force.  Due to the fact that crime under the PPP was high, and growing, the UK, Canada and the USA offered assistance to help them reduce crime and drug trafficking.

The PPP became hysterical, and instead FURTHER corrupted the police force encouraging many to moonlight as vigilantes and para militias.

Once a society becomes solidly criminalized it is a steady downward spiraling.
