Remember, we are the ones in the trenches

Dear Editor,
Now that a date has finally been set for us to go to the polls there is a sudden upsurge of party defections and declarations of voter apathy.
We cannot afford to be distracted by these sentiments. Our mission is to oust the Jagdeo regime and it can only be done if we go to the polls, en masse, and vote for any party but the PPP/C.
We have too much at stake to be sidelined by those who are now claiming disgruntlement because of the absence of a Party agenda.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has reported on the rampancy of prostitution in Guyana amongst both males and females, from as young as early teens and have cited poverty as one of the reasons. Healthcare in the nation is sorely lacking.
The international organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that some 2.5% of Guyanese between ages 15-49 are infected with HIV and that other sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise. This is in addition to the number of amputations and associated blindness for treatable illnesses like diabetes.
The point is, we have too much wrong amongst ourselves to be distracted by people who are not voting because they live overseas. We have no time to pay attention to those who are still asking for β€˜consumable’ delivery of a specific Party’s agenda.
We live here and we know that the one agenda we seek is a government that works for us all. And having had nineteen years of the present government, we know that any other could never be worse.
So let us not be distracted by these nonresident Guyanese who are suddenly feeling flashes of patriotism. Let us remember that we are the ones in the trenches dealing with an economy that remains in freefall and social standards that continue to deteriorate.
