“Fatherhood is the best gift that a man can receive it is precious because it is a gift from God who wants us to look after his children on earth. We must be the best role model to our children and always strive to set the proper example.” Those were the words of RHTYSC, MS Secretary/ CEO Hilbert Foster to dozens of fathers as the club hosted its Walter Nero Memorial Father Day’s Award Programme at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
The Father’s Day programme is an annual programme of the RHTYSC but this year’s event was solely sponsored by the Nero’s family in honour of their father, Walter Nero who died earlier in the year. A total of 70 fathers received food hampers from the RHTYSC, MS, while Ingram Rodney of 4th Street, Rose Hall Town was named as the first Awardee of the RHTYSC/Walter Nero Memorial Father of the Year.
The long standing Secretary/CEO urged the fathers in attendance to not only support their children financially but to set examples so that they can say no to crime, premarital sex, drugs, alcohol and suicide. Noting that Rose Hall Town is in need of positive role models, he called on the fathers to share their vast experience with the younger generation so that they can learn that success comes via hard work, honesty, dedication, faith in the God we serve and belief in the work we do. The RHTY&SC, MS he stated would continue to work hard to make a positive difference and to offer programmes that targets the promotion of family values.
Rodney a father of three children, two of them who are still alive, was selected as the 2017 Role Model Father of the Year by the club’s eight cricket teams and the Over 35Group. He expressed gratitude to the RHTYSC for honouring him and stated that he felt humbled and blessed to be recognised by Guyana’s leading youth and sports club, an organisation he was once associated with as a cricketer. He urged his fellow parents to make sure that they allow no child to feel unloved or unwanted and like Foster, he urged them to be positive role models. Rodney congratulated the RHTY&SC on its remarkable service to others and pleaded with the club to continue doing so, despite numerous constraints. Rodney received a framed certificate, Medal of Excellence, Trophy and a special gift as his prizes. The teams and the Over 35 Group would like to express gratitude to the Nero’s family especially Karen, Sandra, Jackie, Theresa and Mary for their sponsorship of the programme. Earlier in the month, the RHTY&SC had provided snacks to over 100 fathers as they waited to collect their monthly old age pension at the Rose Hall Town Post office and also provided three of them with special gifts worth a combined $30,000 via a raffle system.
The Father’s Day Programme was the 300th completed out of the 500 programmes/activities the RHTYSC has set itself for 2017.
