Definition of VAT... Is it really 16%?
A ream of copy paper that a student uses to print his or her school work is sold by an importer in Georgetown for G$1000 per ream. When 16% Vat is added, it costs G$1160.A second vendor purchases it and takes it to another area and sells it for G$1400.When 16% Vat is added this item costs G$1624.Before this item goes in the student's hand, a total of G$384 is paid for in Vat (38%).This ream of paper eventually cost this student G$1624 which is a 62% price increase from the original price of G$1000.This is not only for paper but so many other products that poor people needs for survival. Is this any form of progress?

Do you understand what taxation is?

They should make VAT 20% across the board..

The Government needs money to pay for development and pay off the natioal debt.

VAT in itself is not a bad thing the 16% is terrible, we in the PPP have made a bold step in introducing VAT and it is a progressive move but the 16 % was a miscalculation by his excellency and should not have been set so high, the surpluses they are seeing is a clear indication that they set it too high.

What the Team at GRA and MOF should have done was really focus on blowing out enforcement and introducing GRA certified cash registers all over the place and really push the banks for electronic commerce in Guyana which would help dampen crime and also cut into the underground cash economy.

Of course PPP is asleep at the wheel. The fat cats have gotten lazy like Khurshid and this is why it is time for the PPP to take a chill pill and sit still.

You cannot compare Guyana to the rest of the caribbean you have to compare it to haiti and ethiopia and bangladesh and places like that.
Get some sense in your head for once.

Rama, you said you know about cane cutters and only live with them for a short time.
Do you really know how ordinary citizens live who have to pay 16% VAT, plus other taxes ?
Man, carry you rass, you know zilch. You are just a blabber-mouth like most in the PPP.

Rama, like many in the PPP who are afraid to leave GT, should spend more time with cane cutters and other labourers, share their food and drink their estate tar-tasting water and when they injure themself, they have to take other gang mambers, as non paying witness, to their injury for NIS.
If they want to find out about suicide prevention, they should go live with the people for a few months and find out about their daily struggles and what cause them to take their own life.
The problem with the Jagdeo government, they live in their ivory towers in GT, eat in nice restaurants and make decisions about ordinary citizens, who they dont have a clue about.
