The poem, a thumri

When Wajid Ali Shah Bahadur was expelled from Lucknow to Calcutta by Britishers, he wrote the parting poem Babul Mora, picturing the mind of a heart broken man. Although his takhalus (pen-name) was Qaisar, he used the pseudonym "Akhtarpiya" for his numerous compositions. Under this pen name, he wrote over forty works - poems, prose and Thumris. "Diwan-i-Akhtar", "Husn-i-Akhtar" contain his Ghazals. He is said to have composed many new ragasand named them Jogi, Juhi, Shah-Pasand, etc.He expressed his pain of parting in the lyrics of ‘Babul mora naihar chhuto jaye’

The lyrics mean roughly - The rough translation (the song can be a metaphor for a wedding as well as funeral procession)

My father! I'm leaving home.
The four bearers lift my doli (palanquin)

(here it can also mean the four coffin bearers).

I'm leaving those who were my own.
Your courtyard is now like a mountain,

and the threshold, a foreign country.

WE ARE FEATURING K.C. DEY

Dhoop Chhaon was a 1935 Hindi movie directed by Nitin Bose.

It was the first Hindi film to use playback singing. Before this, film makers did not use playback singers and the original actors and actresses sang their own songs. Curiously, actors were chosen specifically for their singing abilities. Nitin Bose came up with the idea of playback singing and he discussed this with music director R C Boral and his brother Mukul Bose, who was also the sound recordist in New Theatres, Calcutta. And it worked in a big way. From then on, the system of playback singing was introduced in Indian films.

PANKAJ SINGS: Yeh Raatein, Yeh Mausam, Yeh Hassana

Ye raatein ye mausam ye hansnaa hansaana, non-film song

There would be several hundred songs of at least two dozens of singers very close to me heart. From this vast ocean if I have to select a few most precious, most beautiful gems this song would figure at the very top. There is something immortal about it, its words, its tunes that mesmerizes you even if your buddy Chakko or Mukho sings it.

Translations:

These nights
These nights, these climes
These laughter's and this merrymaking
And me
You may forget me but forget these not.

These playful glances, these drunken gestures
These clouds immersed  in your dark kohl eyes
This ambiance
And floating on the lips of air this melody of silence
And me
You may forget me but forget these not

In the meadows when we met
It became a story
My love and your passion
These two hot breaths coming together
These wandering clouds, these dancing raindrops
This state of euphoria and you and me lost in our reverie
This humming of yours with me
And me
You may forget me but forget these not

TERE MANDIR KA HOON DEEPAK JAL RAHA

Tere Mandir ka hoon deepak, jal raha 2
I am the burning lamp in your temple,
Aag jeevan mein main bhar kar chal raha
I live with this fire (pain) in my heart.
Jal Raha
Burning.
Tere Mandir ka hoon deepak jal raha
I am the burning lamp in your temple

Kya tu mere dard se anjaan hai
Are you unaware of my pain?
Teri meri kya nayee pehchan hai
Don't you know me from before?
Jo bina pani patasha ghal raha
Can a sugar candy melt without water?
Aag jeevan mein main bhar kar chal raha
I live on with this fire (pain) in my heart..

Tere Mandir ka hoon deepak jal raha
I am the burning lamp in your temple

Ek jhalak mujh ko dekha de sanware
Oh Krishna!(Sanware) please show me your face once,
Mujh ko le chal tu kadamb ki chhaon re
Please take me to the shade of Kadamba trees.
Sanware,(name of God Krishna)
O re chhaliya, aaaaaaa aaaaa
O re Cheater(Chaliya is typical hindi means Gopi is saying to God Krishna with love).....
O re Chahliya kyoon mujhe tu chal raha
Oh, the great cheater why are you playing games with me?
Aag jeevan mein main bhar kar chal raha
I live with this fire (pain) in my heart.
Tere Mandir ka hoon Deepak jal raha
I am the burning lamp in your temple

Main to kismat bansuri ki baanta ka
I would like to be a flute
Ek dhun pe sau tarhe se naachta
I danced in 100 different ways on a single tune.
Aankh se Jamna ka pani dhal raha
Jamuna is flowing from my eyes

Tere Mandir ka hoon deepak jal raha
I am the burning lamp in your temple.

Its splendor unequaled
Its opulence refreshing
Like a new day, everyday
Each leaf, every branch is alive with magic
Swaying with a cheerful carefree abandon
Each bird, a remarkable wonder
Each flower, a brilliance that steals the heart away
Every budding blossom
Fresh with life, alluring
Ah, this life, this colorful world
Behold and be enchanted, my dear friend

Kadam kadam par aashaa apnaa roop anoop dikhaati hai
Bigde kaaj banaati hai, dheeraj ke geet sunaati hai
Iskaa sur misri se meethaa iski taal sajeeli baabaa
Duniyaa rang rangeeli

At every step in life, every moment
Hope and expectation manifests itself
In images unseen, anew, incomparable
Mending fortunes, healing destinies
Whispering songs of comfort
In melodies sweeter than honey
Adorned with rhythms bejeweled
Ah, this life, this colorful world
Behold and be enchanted, my dear friend

Dukh ki nadiyaa jeewan naiyaa aashaa ke patwaar lage
O naiyaa ke khene waale ,naiyaa teri paar lage
Paar basat hai desh sunehraa, kismat chhail-chhabeeli baabaa

Duniyaa rang rangeeli

Duniyaa rang rangeeli baabaa, duniyaa rang rangeeli
Duniyaa rang rangeeli baabaa, duniyaa rang rangeeli

Ah, this ferry called life
Paddled with oars of anticipation and hope
Through this grim river of sorrows
O ferryman, be blessed
May your boat safely get across
Where awaits the gleaming land of splendor
And the ever shifting providence, playing mischief
Wonder at this play,
And be enchanted, my dear friend
Ah, this life, this colorful world
