TRANSLATIONS OF URDU POETRY:

POET : BAHADUR SHAH ZAFAR

39) NA KISII KII AANKH KAA NUUR HUUN

Naa kisii kii aankh kaa nuur huun,

Not the light of any one's eyes,

Naa kisii ke dil kaa qaraar huun

Not the solace for any one's heart

Jo kisii ke kaam na aa sake,

of no use to anyone,

Main vo ek musht-e-gubaar huun

I am that one fistful of dust

Main nahin huun naghma-e-jaan feza,

I am not the song infusing of life,

Koii sun ke mujh ko karega kya

Why would anyone want to hear me

Main bare birog ki huun sada,

I am the sound of separation,

Main bare dukhon ki pukaar huun

I am the wail of much distress

Meraa rang ruup bigar gayaa,

My complexion and beauty is ravaged,

Meraa yaar mujh se bichar gayaa

My beloved is parted from me

Jo chaman khizaan se ujar gayaa,

The garden that got ruined in autumn,

Main usi ki fasl-e-bahaar huun

I am the crop of its spring

Naa to main kisii kaa habiib huun,

I am neither anyone's friend,

Naa to main kisii kaa raqiib huun,

Nor am I anyone's rival

Jo bigar gayaa vo nasiib huun,

The one that is ruined, I am that fate

Jo ujar gayaa vo dayaar huun.

The one that is destroyed, that land

Pae faatihaa koi aae kyuun,

Why should anyone come to sing a requiem

Koi chaar phuul charhaae kyuun?

Why should anyone come to offer four flowers

Koi aake shamaa jalaae kyuun,

Why should anyone come to light a candle

Main vo bekasi kaa mazaar huun

I am the tomb of that destitution

POET: NASIR KAZMI

The next Poet on our list is NASIR KAZMI:

Nasir Kazmi was born on December 8, 1925 at Ambala in British India. Kazmi was educated at Ambala, Simla and Lahore. He returned to Ambala in 1945 and started looking after his ancestral land. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, he came to Lahore. He did some journalistic work with Auraq-e-Nau as an editor and became editor-in-chief of the magazine Humayun in 1952. Later he was associated with Radio Pakistan, Lahore and other literary publications and organizations. Nasir Kazmi started his poetic life in 1940 by following the style of Akhtar Sherani and wrote romantic poems and sonnets. Later he began writing ghazals under the guidance of Hafeez Hoshyarpuri. He was a great admirer of Mir Taqi Mir and probably the melancholy and “Ehsaas-e-Mehroomi” in his poetry was a direct result of that. His tutor in poetry was Hafeez Hoshyarpuri, who himself used a lot of symbols from nature in his poems. He was one of the greatest poets of this era, especially in the use of “ista aaray” and “chhotee beher”. His last four books were published after his death. He died in Lahore on March 2, 1972 due to stomach cancer.

41) DIL DHADAKNE KA SABAB YAAD AYA

Dil dhadakne  ka sabab yaad aya
It came to me, the reason my heart beats
Wo teri yaad thi  ab yaad aya
It was your memory, I just remembered

Aaj mushkil tha sanmbhal na.. ae dost
Today was hard, my friend, lend me a hand
Tu musibat me.n ajab yaad aya
In my troubles, you came to mind

Haal-e-dil hum bhi sunate lakin
I, too, would have told her how my heart felt,
Jab wo rukhsat huwe, tab yaad aya
But I only remembered after she left

Din guzara tha badi mushkil se
The day went by with much difficulty
Phir tera wada-e-shab yaad aya
Again, I remembered the night you promised me

Baith kar saaya-e-gul me "Nasir"
Sitting in the shadow of the flowers 'Nasir'
Hum bahut roye, wo jab yaad aya.
I wept a lot, when her memory came to me

Phir kaiee log nazar se guzray
Again, everyone passed by me unseen,
Phir koi shehar-e-tarab yaad aya
Again, I remembered that joyous place

42) DIL MEIN IK LEHAR SI UTHI HAI ABHI

Dil mein ek lahar si utthi hai abhi
A ripple has risen in my heart,
Koi taaza havaa chali hai abhi
A new kind of breeze is blowing

Shor barpaa hai khana-e-dil mein
I hear a tumultous roar in my heart
Koi deewaar si girii hai abhi
As if some wall has fallen just now

Kuch to naazuk mizaaj hai hum bhi
I have a delicate disposition, too
(Aur ye chot bhi nayee hai abhi
And this wound is still fresh

Yaad ki be-nishan jazeeron se

From the uncharted islands of my memory,

Teri aawaaz aa rahi hai abhi

I now hear your voice rising forth

Shahar ki be-chiraagh galiyon mein
In the darkened streets of the city,

Zindagi tujh ko dhoondati hai abhi
My soul searches for you

Apanii Dhun Mein Rahataa Huun
I carry on at my own pace
Main bhii tere jaisaa huun
I, too, am just like you

O pichhalii rut ke saathii
O my companions of days gone by
Ab ke baras main tanhaa huun

Tterii galii mein saaraa din
All day, on your street,
Dukh ke kankar chunataa huun
I gather the pebbles of pain

Mujh se aankh milaaye kaun
Who will look into my eyes?

I am a mirror that belongs only to you

Meraa diyaa jalaaye kaun
Who will light my lamp?
Main teraa khaalii kamaraa huun
I am an empty room in your life

Tere siva mujhay pehne kaun
Who will wear me except you?
Main tere tanka kapda huun
I am a garment on your body

Tuu jiivan kii bharii galii
You are a lane full of life
Main jangal kaa rastaa huun
I am a forlorn path in the wilderness

Apanii lahar hai apanaa rog
My own movement is my bane
Dariyaa huun aur pyaasaa huun

Dil kii baat labon tak laathe
The feelings of the heart come up to the lips
Ab tak hum dukh sahte hain
Till now, I suffer the pain silently

Hum ne sunaa tha, is bastii mein
I had heard that in this town,
Dil waale bhi rahte hain
There are also people of the heart

Ek hamein awaara kahna
For one, you may call me immoral,
Koi badaa ilzaam nahin
It is not such a big accusation

Duniya waale dil waalon ko
The people of the world
Aur bahut kuchh kahtein hain
Call us  much worse names

44) DIL MEIN AUR TO KYA RAKHA HAI

Dil mein aur to kya rakha hai
What else is left in my heart?
Tera dard chhupa rakha hai
I have hidden my aching for you

Itne dukhon ki tez hava mein
Amids't the storms of so many aches,
Dil ka deep jala rakha hai
I have kept the flame burning in my heart

Is nagri ke kuchh logon ne
There are some in this world
Dukh ka naam dava rakha hai
Who call the aching a cure

Vada-e-yaar ki baat na chedo
Do not speak of my lover's promise
Yeh dhoka bhi kha rakha hai
I have suffered that deceit already

Bhool bhi jaao biiti baatein
Forget about the past and bygones
In baatoon mein kyaa rakha hai
There is no use talking of them

Chup chup kyun rahte ho "Nasir"
Why do you remain silent, ˜Nasir'
Yeh kya rog laga rakha hai.
What kind of ailment is that?

45) PHIR SAVAN RUT KI PAWAN CHALI TUM YAAD AAYE

Phir savan rut ki pavan chali tum yaad aaye

The breeze of rainy season blew, I thought of you.
Phir patton ki paazeb baji tum yaad aaye

The clapping chain of leaves played, I thought of you.

Phir kunjein bolin ghaas ke hare samandar mein

Ducks spoke in the green sea of rolling grass.

Rut aa_ii piile phuulon ki tum yaad aaye

The season full of yellow blooms arrived, I thought of you.

Phir kagaa bolaa ghar ki sunaa aangan mein

A crow cried in the lonely courtyard of my house

Phir amrat ras ki buund pari tum yaad aaye

Drops of the healing shower fell, I thought of you.

Pahale to main chikh ke roya aur phir hansane lagaa

At first I screamed crying and then I laughed.

Baadal garjaa bijali chamaki tum yaad aaye

Clouds roared, lights flashed,  I thought of you

.

Din bhar to main duniya ke dhandhon mein khoya raha

Day long I remained lost in the tasks of living.

Jab divaron se dhup dhali tum yaad aaye

When sunshine left the walls, I thought of you.

As we bid 'goodbye to Nasir Kazmi' after completing his five poems, we wish to give a recap like we have done with other Poets:

41) DIL DHADAKNE KA SABAB YAAD AYA

It came to me, the reason why my heart beats

42) DIL MEIN IK LEHAR SI UTHI HAI ABHI

A ripple has risen in my heart

43) APNI DHUN MEIN RAHATAA HUUN

I carry on at my own pace

44) DIL MEIN AUR TO KYA RAKHA HAI

What else is left in my heart?

45) PHIR SAVAN RUT KI PAWAN CHALI TUM YAAD AAYE

The breeze of rainy season blew, and I remembered you.
