Host GFC, Western Tigers and Police all emerged victorious on Sunday night as the top Brandz Corona Beer invitational football tournament continued at the GFC Ground with GFC beating Black Pearl FC 6-1, Western Tigers destroying Beacons FC 13-1 and Police getting past Camptown 1-nil.
In sunny conditions, with the shadow of the GFC Pavilion stretching across the pitch, a handful of fans watched as the home team executed several excellent passes and demonstrated a skill level which was superior to their opponents Black Pearl FC.
On a ground which was a lot firmer than on Friday and with pulsating music coming from the Black Peal Sound System in the pavilion, Venezuelan Alberto Vera wasted two chances to score in quick succession when he missed judged a pass from square infront of the goal mouth.
Then, after doing all the hard work to get past the defenders and with only the keeper to beat, Vera kicked the ball straight at the Black Peal Custodian as GFC dominated possession but had problems finishing.
A powerful shot from just outside the box went right through the Black Pearl Keeper as Nigerian Benjamin Opera scored the opening goal in the 14th minute.
A tackle inside the area brought down Vera resulting in a penalty being awarded the GFC and Shaquille Bowan made no mistake to give his team a 2-nil advantage in the 27th minute.
Black Pearl, who were mauled 13-0 by favorites Western Tigers, had a couple of opportunities but as soon as they got the ball it was quickly taken away by GFC.
Lavaughn Innis, in a well orchestrated build-up by two assists, caught the defence coming forward as he fired from just outside the 18-yard box in the 35th minute to make the score GFC 3, Black Pearl nil, a score line which remained by half-time.
The second half saw three more goals being scored as Joel Humphrey netted in 66th minute, Vera finally found the back of the net in the 73rd minute, while Bowan in the 79th minute added to the tally. Ocemic Griffith scored Black Pearl’s lone goal in the 58th minute.
Western Tigers, easily the best team in the tournament, continued their high scoring wins with a 13-1 effort against Beacons.
The impressive Andrew Murray was on fire, blasting in five goals, while Hubert Pedro beat Beacons’ Custodian four times to set up the emphatic win under lights.
Murray scored in the 15th, 58th, 59th, 80th, & 87th minutes, Pedro goals came in the 62nd, 63rd, 67th, & 91st minutes, while Mark Gritten (19th), Lennox Cort (68th) and Shane Morris (76th) also registered goals as the Tigers’ scored 13 goals for the second time in the competition.
