Among the island nations that make up the West Indies cricket team, Guyana has historically been one of the most influential and over the years, the island nation has supplied the team with plenty of top-class cricketers.

5 Alvin Kallicharan

Alvin Kallicharan
Left-handed batsman Alvin Kallicharan was one of the most elegant batsmen to have ever played for the West Indies and during his 9-year career from 1972 to 1981, he cemented his place in Caribbean cricket history.

For Guyana, he debuted in the 1966-67 season and went on to play for them till 1990 and is rightly regarded as one of the best to have represented the island nation in domestic cricket. In a remarkable career, Kallicharan notched up 87 first-class centuries to go along with 160 half-centuries, and ran up an aggregate of 32650 runs in first-class cricket.

For West Indies he was equally prolific, having scored 12 centuries and 21 half-centuries in 66 Test matches, at an average of 44.43. There is no doubt that he is one of the finest cricketers that Guyana has ever produced.

Batsman Rohan Kanhai became one of the greatest run scorers for the West Indies in the years preceding their great years under Clive Lloyd and to this day, his delightful stroke making remains a matter of great joy for anyone who watched him play.

Kanhai, who went on to become a Guyanese legend, scored 15 centuries and 28 half-centuries in 79 games for the West Indies in the years between 1957 and 1974, to become one of the best batsmen to have ever played for the Calypso Kings.

3 Clive Lloyd

West Indies v England - 3rd Test: Day One

The man who was known as the 'Supercat' was one of the greatest captains to have ever played the game and he turned the West Indies into the most dominant side in world cricket during his reign.

However, what is often forgotten about Lloyd is the fact that he was one of the world's leading batsmen as well, and he remains one of the Guyana's greatest ever players.

Lloyd scored 19 centuries in 110 Tests at an average of 46.67 and played a captain's knock in the 1975 World Cup final when he slammed a 85 balls 102 against Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson to win the inaugural global tournament for the West Indies.

For Guyana, he was equally belligerent, and remains one of their best players. In his first-class career, he played a staggering 490 games and scored more than 31000 runs at an average of 49.26, with 79 tons.

2 Shivnarine Chanderpaul

New Zealand v West Indies - Third Test: Day 1

He is one of the greatest batsmen to have ever played for the West Indies and without a doubt, among the best batsmen that Guyana has ever produced. Chanderpaul first played for Guyana in 1991 as a teenager and quickly grew into one of their best batsmen.

Even though he retired from international cricket in 2015, he continues to play for Guyana and remains the best batsman in the side. Chanderpaul is the highest run scorer in the history of Guyanese cricket with 5746 runs, at an average of 63.14.

He has also scored 17 centuries for Guyana during his first-class career and continues to be the most influential player in the side. He remained the bulwark of West Indian batting after the retirements of some of Brian Lara and will forever be remembered as one of Guyana's greatest ever cricketers.

1 Lance Gibbs

Lance Gibbs

The West Indies might be better known for their plethora of great fast bowlers but one of the finest off-spin bowlers in the game played for them in the 1960s and 1970s in the form of Guyana's Lance Gibbs.

Gibbs took 309 wickets in an international career that spanned around 18 years and 79 Tests and remains the first spin bowler to have breached the hallowed 300 wickets barrier in Test cricket.

His craft, class and guile made him one of the toughest bowlers to face in Test cricket during that time and one of the most important things about him was that he could take wickets even if the wicket was an unresponsive one.

He was equally effective in first-class cricket, the bulk of which he played for Guyana and picked up a staggering 1024 wickets in 330 games at an average of 27.72. There is no doubt that he is Guyana's greatest ever cricketer.
