To My American Friends - Let's talk Affordable Healthcare

Ok

All major western nations have Free or affordable heath care.

This is a known fact.

How come the great United States cannot implement affordable health care ?

Sadly, this is puzzling and at times disgraceful. I call on ALL of my American friends to chime in.

By the way, ALL Canadians have free health care regardless of race, colour, religion or Income.

Its not happening under Trump

What makes you think so ?

The hirees Trump is selecting are all business oriented, who are more interested in having a competitive insurance system, as opposed to having a more socialized health care system or a hybrid one like Canada. He wants to take it back to the way it was before Obamacare. This means that premiums will remain high, but, presumably, we will have a superior system. Essentially, the poor will have less options or no insurance, and the wealthy will have the best health care because they will be the one who can afford it....its like saying that the law is blind to justice, but we do know that if you are wealthy and your lawyer is well known, you have a better chance of not being convicted of a crime, compared to a poor person.

However, I think the fact that Trump wants to allow children under 26 to be covered by their parents and having no prior illness as a factor is a good thing and its good that he wants to retain this part of Obamacare.

The dude that Trump hired wants to get rid of Medicare, Obamacare and implement Health Savings Accounts.

No amount of health savings will prepare you for that one hospital bill...

There will be no such thing as free healthcare under Trump and the Republicans

I am not even a big fan of Obamacare, but Trump and the Repubs don't have a better plan to replace it...

I was referring to health insurance for young people. Medicaid is for the old, and very poor, and does not cover all the care that people need.

The Medicaid system has been around for a long time and many who need it have benefitted.  Unfortunately, some people abuse the freeness.  Under Obamacare, Medicaid would be phased out.  Hopefully Trump can repeal it and the elderly and poor can continue to get free medical care.

Young people are covered by their parents until they reach 26.  And yes Medicaid covers everything  - dental, optical, prescriptions, hospital stay, emergency room visits, etc.

Gyal Bibi, Most welfare people have medicaid for their insurance. The republicans want to abolish every government run program and turn them over to private companies who will make money off of them. This way the poor will be left at the mercy of corporations whose CEOs only care about profits. Corporate greed. They might even privatize medicare. Imagine what would happen if medicare is privatized and the stock market crashes?

Is healthcare in Canada free really considering the high taxes you pay. Do you get your money's worth? I know people who have to dig deep into their pockets to pay for root canal as Canada tell them to take an aspirin and it is not life threatening.

Wow

I am impressed with the manner in which this debate is headed. Fair, straightforward and honest responses. It gives me a better understanding of how complex this matter is.

Republicans and Democrats (more so Republicans) are responsible for the high cost of health care. It seems that this is all about corporate greed.

Why should the same medication which sells for $ 10 dollars in Canada cost $ 100 in the USA ? Prescription cost is also at play here. Prescription companies are gouging.

I terms of in care hospital costs, how much more does it cost in USA ?

If memory serves me right, Bill Clinton tried some reform but the Republicans blocked it.

Let us see what President Trump comes up with. Americans need to hold their Politicians responsible and see how quickly they would back down from their greed.

I hope that some folks who actually are part of the health care system in the USA chime in.

Our system in Canada is not perfect but despite the imperfections, it works and everyone has access to free health care. America needs to start with affordable health care but as far as I can see, the insurance companies are the greedy bunch here.

Talking about insurance, I sued my insurance company for a matter unrelated to heath care and they quickly settled after they saw the name of my lawyer just because he was not a small time lawyer. It sad that those with access to financial resources get better treatment.

I hope that President Trump works hard towards affordable health care for ALL Americans.

Will he take on the Republicans and the Insurance companies ? He has a good mandate from the people, it is up to him to bring change in the health care system.

Totally false. Our health care system works, it is the envy of the world.

Dental is not covered and prescription as part of the health care but everything else is covered. Most companies offer their employees very cheap insurance to cover dental care and prescription.

Retirees pay ZERO for prescriptions. If someone is poor and on social assistance they have free prescriptions. I have no problem with the poor and less fortunate receiving free prescriptions.

Anyone can incur a surgery costing a million and every single penny is covered by health care. Rich or Poor.

If poor Cuba can have affordable health care any rich nation should also be able to offer it's citizens affordable health care.

I don't think Gov't will privatize Medicare.  It's too complex and has to be regulated to protect senior citizens from corporate abuse.  The Republicans will not abolish government programs.  What they will do is trim off the dead wood like those living free off the system.  Medicare and Medicaid were designed to serve the needy, the poor, and the elderly and should remain if managed properly.  Let's see how Seema Verma manages Medicare and Medicaid.  She is the new boss!

Clearly you live in an alternate universe from my relatives there. They have to wait months for simple checkups. While surgeries are covered, it takes forever to book an appointment. I suppose you get what you pay for.

Canadian health care is the pits. It is delivered per a government panel and not as needed by the patient with their fears and concerns being the premium.  American health care is high for many reasons I do not care to discuss with you since it would be water on a ducks back. The point I make is that even the indigent  can enter a trauma center and receive optimal health care as determined by the physicians on the spot with no concern for cost.

Sad. We work 40 -50 years and pay our taxes and still have to pay for medicare, supplemental insurance and drug prescription drugs. Refugees who come here and want to kill us get everything for free. I can see where medicaid is necessary for some. But please, get a job and help pay for some of what you need.

You get a bill for $14,000 after you pay $1,100 for your insurance.  The people on Medicaid do not get a bill.  It's all free.  And as Skelly correctly pointed out many of them are refugees who are planning to kill Americans.

I hope people are starting to see why Trump won the election.

Like Trump, I don't pay taxes.  I get my money's worth.  You don't need at appointment for any ailments. There are numerous walking centres; some are open 24 hours. If an emergency situation is assessed, they can escalate it to the ER at a hospital nearby. We have the best. Health officials from all over the world come here to study our system, even though it may not be the best.

The insurance paid the $14K...I am just stating the cost of such a procedure

With or without Obamacare, my premium would be around $1000....unless I go for a high deductible plan

Obamacare benefits folks with a certain level of income with the subsidies...I could see why some businesses are not happy with the mandate that they have to cover everyone

Basic healthcare is free in Canada, drugs you pay. Free healthcare benefits the poor, they don't eat well, they don't exercise, they work physically hard, they don't diet, these are the people that get sick. The waiting time for surgery is six to ten months, an MRI is three months, but if you can pay ,you can have surgery in days also MRI. Yes, when you are 65 and older drugs are free, but nothing is really free, we in Canada pay very high taxes and have high cost of living. The same job in the USA pays up to 50% more than Canada and that is US dollars, in the USA food is cheaper, gas is cheaper etc., I do pay for a private health insurance via Sunlife, I need the best care my health comes first.

Middle class people don't get affordable health care.  They think that they do because their employers heavily subsidize.

Madam, I suspect that you live in NYC. Don't know if you are married, or have kids, but if you do and you had to get decent health insurance, expect to shell out just under $2k per month.  And this for an HMO. Want out of network providers, its even more expensive.

YOUR Trump wants to end employer based insurance, and give you tax credits to buy your own.  You know how that facts.  You spend the money upfront, and hope that the tax credits allows you a huge tax refunds.

I don't know many middle, or even upper middle income people in NYC who can suddenly allocate an additional monthly bill of $2k, without jeopardizing other goals that they might have.

The man who has been appointed by Trump to deal with health issues is on record for wanting existing employer based health insurance to be replaced by tax credits.

Each employee will then buy their own health insurance. In fact he wants employers to lose the ability to deduct health insurance premiums that they pay on behalf of their employees.

He will peddle the myth that Blue Cross Montana, and Blue Cross Iowa means increased competition if some one in NYC can chose one or the other.  Because we have seen increased convergence of health insurance carriers, so there is already little competition.

And I am yet to hear what they plan to do to deal with the underlying health costs.

Clearly Trump is telling us what he plans to do. Too bad that the idiots who voted for him didn't ask him what he meant when he screamed that he would end Obamacare.

You think repeating this over and over makes you seem intelligent?  No it just reveals that your support for Trump is based on your racist instincts.

Here you are boasting that Canada offers universal health care, yet you are a fanatic behind a man who will remove the limited assistance that Americans get in accessing health insurance.

Go to Trump and demand that he offers universal healthcare to Americans, and see if he doesn't send his gestapo goon squad to beat you up, screaming "Trump" as they do so.  You are just the type of little brown man who they like to assault.

I repeat, stop shooting for the rear. Wait for Trump to start governing and implementing his policies and then start commenting.

Until then, you are just blowing smoke and sounding more and more like Kari.

Like celebrating Hillary's victory on election night.
