APNU+AFC stages unity rally at Vreed-en-Hoop

Prime Ministerial Candidate of the APNU+AFC coalition, Moses Nagamootoo, addresses the coalition’s Unity Rally last evening at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara. He promised, if the coalition wins the election, it will increase the Social security’s old age pension.

APNU+AFC misleads public -Anna Catherina Islamic Complex did not endorse APNU+AFC

CONTRARY to reports by the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition, that the “Muslim community” has endorsed them, the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) has rejected this notion in its entirety, lamenting that “it has not endorsed [the] APNU+AFC Coalition” as was reported.Based on the need for representation of the issues facing the Muslim community, and also the fears for the pre and post-elections scenario, the ACIC opted to engage the two major political parties since no other major Islamic organisation had explored this option.

One of the posts on the APNU+AFC Facebook page which states: “…the Muslim leaders signalled their endorsement of the APNU+AFC coalition

One of the posts on the APNU+AFC Facebook page which states: “…the Muslim leaders signalled their endorsement of the APNU+AFC coalition

As such, an ACIC and a faction of the wider Muslim community met with prime ministerial candidate of the ruling’s People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Ms. Elisabeth Harper last week when they deliberated on issues relating to the advancement of the Muslim community.
The ACIC disclosed that following hours of discussions between the delegation and Ms. Harper, a photo op was subsequently had, “but neither she [Ms. Harper] nor her political party, the PPP/C used the meeting as an endorsement.”
In similar fashion, the delegation met with the APNU+AFC coalition on Thursday, April 23, with the same motive of engaging the political party on issues surrounding the Muslim community.
According to the ACIC in a statement issued yesterday, the presence of the Muslim leaders at these meetings was “never to endorse any political party,” but rather “to engage the two major political parties in understanding the issues facing the Muslim community and also the wider Guyanese community.”
But this meeting between the APNU+AFC coalition and the ACIC delegation was interpreted as an “endorsement” by the coalition, since photographs of the meeting were taken to social media and posted on the APNU+AFC pages bearing the caption: “Muslim community endorses APNU+AFC.”
Expressing their “shock” yesterday at these recent developments, the ACIC made it pellucid that they“have not endorsed the APNU+AFC coalition” as was reported.
Further disclosing that “it is not a political institution,” the Islamic body related that it is Guyana’s main Islamic Centre and a centre of spirituality, education, peace, universal goodwill and harmony, which seeks to work and support only the elected leaders of Guyana. Hence the opportunity was taken to engage both of the major political parties ahead of the May 11 General and Regional elections.
Detailing the repercussions of such a move by the coalition to sell the idea that the ACIC has endorsed them, the Islamic body explained that this move has caused the Complex to “lose impartiality” as their local and international partners, many of whom fund their projects, are “dismayed at the supposition of an endorsement of a political party.”
According to the ACIC, “had the APNU+AFC stated that ACIC and other Muslim Leaders had discussions and published photos, we would have had no complaints, the fact that it stated our endorsement of  the party, is what we feel is most unfortunate.

I don't think that it will happen. Both sides are now maturing and Guyanese are fed up with election violence.

UK envoy calls on politicians to refrain from inciteful, provocative language on campaign trail

UK High Commissioner, James Gregory Quinn

UK High Commissioner, James Gregory Quinn

Commissioner of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, James Gregory Quinn has expressed concern over the language that is being used in all political camps.
As he spoke to members of the media at his Bel Air Gardens, Georgetown residence yesterday, Quinn noted that it is imperative that voters feel that they can cast their ballot for any political party that they wish without intimidation or restrictions.
Though he refrained from pinpointing instances or calling out any particular politician, the High Commissioner opined that the rhetoric being used is not conducive to a proper elections campaign.
In this vein, he called on politicians to avoid inflammatory or provocative language. This he has highlighted as the responsibility of all stakeholders, regardless of who they represent.
The UK envoy told members of the media that it is a “fundamental thing for us is to ensure that the elections are free, fair, transparent and accurately represent the views of the electorate in this country so at the end of the day people can stand up and feel that they have had the opportunity to cast their vote for the person they want to vote for, without any hindrance.”

Brathwaite ton stiffens West Indies’ resolve

second-innings efforts to defy England in Grenada. As the National Stadium basked in sunlight, Brathwaite summoned his first significant contribution of the series to bind together a resolute reply, after England had taken a 165-run lead and early impetus in their attempts to force a victory.
A second-wicket stand of 142 between Braithwaite and Darren Bravo tempered England’s expectations after they had removed Devon Smith in the third over. Bravo also passed 50, showing greater patience than in the first Test, until England succeeded with a plan to bowl doggedly into the rough outside off stump. James Anderson and Stuart Broad took the wickets but England’s attack otherwise worked hard for little reward.
Brathwaite, 22, has made each of his four Test hundreds within the last 12 months and his relish for long innings was again in evidence. Twice he flashed Ben Stokes behind gully, to the allrounder’s noticeable chagrin, and he survived a review for lbw against Chris Jordan thanks to an inside edge. Otherwise, there was little for England to exploit.
Eight of Brathwaite’s 11 boundaries whistled away through the area from point round to third man and he was equal to England’s attempts to have him caught at short leg, as in the second innings in Antigua.
During the evening session, he spent 26 balls on 69, as well as playing out six maidens against Joe Root. England attempted to delay him through the 90s, as well, but Brathwaite was unperturbed and inched to three figures in the penultimate over of the day, having faced 228 balls. There has now been a West Indies centurion in each of their four innings against England.

I would not blame them. When there is no future for a sizable minority-war is the only option. Terror is the only resort to match the racists. Those kulies enjoying life, prosperity and town life should move to the Corentyne wid dey fellow racists. Living among Black people and still consider them to be less than Indoes.

At no time in the political history of Guyana have politicians were so openly racists. Not even Forbes in the days of the Race Riots.

People’s National Congress (PNC)-led A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Presidential Candidate David Granger and Prime Ministerial Candidate Moses Nagamootoo and other coalition leaders, on Thursday met with prominent representatives of the Islamic Community in Guyana.

The meeting took place at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

The group, which included members of the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC), and other religious leaders, outlined a list of concerns facing the Muslim community in Guyana.

Some of the issues raised included rampant crime, corruption, governance and the moral decay of the society.

Addressing the group,

Brigadier (ret’d) Granger said

one of the primary missions

of the APNU/AFC coalition

was the achievement of national unity.

Granger said,

“Many of our problems will be solved

if we can achieve national unity.”

Granger assured the gathering that their concerns

would be addressed by an APNU/AFC government

and promised that his would-be administration

would maintain contact with the religious community.

The APNU/AFC Prime Ministerial Candidate,

in his remarks, said that much had gone wrong in Guyana.

Nagamootoo said;

“Guyana is a plural society

and all are entitled to co-exist.”

He said that the Islamic community

must be a partner if the country

was to recover from the current moral decay;

“the Islamic community must help,

if we are to recover lost values.”

The Islamic leaders stated

that it was time

to put an end to the moral decay of society

and for the development of Guyana

to have a human face.

In endorsing the APNU/AFC,

the Muslim leaders noted that

Guyana needed a fresh start,

and that people

were placing great expectations in the APNU/AFC.

Some of the prominent Islamic leaders who attended

were Raheema Rahaman, Hakeem Khan,

PPP still pulling some crowds in Indian areas.

However, there are some bad bridges going across crown dam to the UG road, some bad patches of roads, and the water problem is bad.  You have to play hide and seek to know when the water will go off and come on, plus the pressure is low.

Water and electricity 24 hours a day more important than a hotel and casino.

PRESIDENT CARTER,

A TRUE FRIEND OF GUYANA,

VISITS AGAIN.

By Ralph Ramkarran

It required the renowned stature and nuanced diplomatic skills of President Carter to negotiate the necessary concessions that would guarantee free and fair elections. President Carter’s name will remain forever associated with Guyana’s democracy.

Hoyte welcomed President and Mrs. Carter during a visit to Guyana ...

After the 1992 elections the Carter Centre assisted in preparing the National Development Strategy (“NDS&rdquo in six volumes, which was launched by President Jagan on January 6, 1997.

Speech delivered by Dr. Cheddi Jagan at swearing-in ceremony on ...

In 2010 the late Winston Murray, a PNCR leader and MP, attempted to rescue the NDS from oblivion and re-introduce it into the national discourse.

He tabled a motion in the National Assembly for its revision by a Special Select Committee. The Government rejected his argument and amended the motion, which was passed, to refer the NDS to the Ministry of Finance for revision. It was so referred and no one has since heard of it. Having invested a great deal of time and money to get the NDS prepared and accepted, and having seen its abandonment after 2000, may have contributed to President Carter’s negative assessment about Guyana which he expressed in 2004.

Winston Murray, flanked by Dr Richard Van West Charles [left) and ...

In 2004 President Carter visited Guyana for the last time at the invitation of President Jagdeo. He had wide consultations in an effort to resolve the political problems confronting Guyana, as so many have tried to do in the past.

... the swearing in of Dr. Jagan as Guyana’s third Executive President

On leaving Guyana, he said: “Instead of achieving this crucial goal of inclusive and shared governance, the Guyanese Government remains divided with a winner-take-all concept that continues to polarize many aspects of the nation’s life…There are only spasmodic meetings between political leaders and publicized agreements between those rare and brief sessions have not been fulfilled.”

With Cheddi

He recommended substantive governance and electoral reforms and the formation of an independent civil society forum to lead a structured discussion on a vision of governance for Guyana to promote reconciliation in an ethnically divided landscape.

President Donald Ramotar[l) and former President Bharrat Jagdeo(r)

President Carter’s views found no favour with the government or the PPP and the Carter Centre thereafter disengaged from Guyana.

President Carter would be aware of the deteriorating political realities in Guyana after the 2011 elections.

The loss of the majority by the PPP and the formation of a minority government, which has tried to cling to office for three plus years, have led to gridlock, lack of progress and frustration.

Instead of forming a coalition government which would have aided national unity and result in much progress, the government has steadfastly resisted any such approach and stubbornly held on to the winner-take-all policy, about which President Carter complained.

President Cheddi Jagan being congratulated by out-going former ...

With this background, it is not known what President Carter expects the outcome of his visit to be. His engagement with Guyana and the investment in time and money that the Carter Centre has made, suggest that his visit could involve a bit more than mere observing of the elections.

It could well be that he recognizes its uncertain outcome and that he wishes to make an input in restraining any negative reactions to the results, whatever they are.

President Carter’s presence can also potentially lead to new political realities, whichever party wins. His message of 2004 is still powerfully resonant today. Hopefully, this true friend of Guyana may still find a way, without interfering, about which he is always careful, to reinforce that message.

Today we have the ludicrous spectacle

of both parties alleging

that the 2011 elections

were rigged against them.
