The prisons crisis besetting the government worsened today with news that prisoners have fled from the Lusignan compound where they were being held.

Prisons Director Gladwin Samuels confirmed the escape.

The government’s Department of Public Information (DPI) issued a statement this morning confirming that 13 prisoners had fled the Lusignan facility where they were being held following the July 9th uprising and fire that destroyed the Camp Street jail.

DPI said that investigations into how they broke out have commenced. The public is being advised to take all necessary precautions and report all suspicious activities to the nearest police station or outpost.

DPI also said that the public is being asked to avoid the lower East Coast Demerara backlands until further notice. A media briefing will be held later this morning.

Part of the pasture area at Lusignan where the prisoners were being held last week.

The prisoners who escaped were among 90 who were separated from just over 400 others who were moved to a nearby area which was made more inhabitable to accommodate them.

Samuels had told reporters last week that the 90 will remain in the swampy conditions and that work will start to sand-fill the area to improve the environment.

“Efforts are being made in order to enhance that area in terms of sand filling so that the situation that was previously aired via social media would not be the condition that they are kept under for whatever duration they will be there”, he told reporters during a press conference hosted by the Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan. The situation being referred to was the posting of videos showing inmates chasing animals and slaughtering a cow.

Ramjattan stated too that the 90 were isolated because authorities did not want them to “contaminate the 400…There are the really bad ones that have done a number of acts which make us believe that if they were to go into that new area we might have further troubles”.

Further troubles have now erupted and will raised questions about how the Guyana Prison Service, the Ministry of Public Security and the government have handled this matter.

Nehru,

It's Guava Season in Guyana.  Sumotoo crops damaged by rain and pests.

I love to watch Ramjattan when he speaks on issues as if he is very serious and we can expect fast results. The man is just there to torment the PPP. He has no interest in helping the Guyanese people. The power to do it is not there. Granger, Harmon, Williams, and some others control the government and direct everything.

prisoners are calling the shots in guyana now. they dictate how much money the government must spend on prisons. ramjattan says $0.5billion so far. soldiers and police and firemen are guarding lusignan but 13 prisoners still get away. its like they are invisible ninjas or jumbies. nehru says gadahas are running guyana. the prisoners think so too. thats why theyre making the government look like clueless fools.

WHAT BLOODY INCOMPETENCE!! BUT THE PNC IS AWARE OF THEIR SUPPORTERS LIMITATIONS: FILTH HEADS, DOPE READS, DUMB, STUPID, NAIVE AND SLAVE LIKE!!!!

Thirteen of the MOST dangerous Prisoners simply walked to Freedom. Only in a PNC Guyana with the backing of GNI FILTH HEADS and a  NAMAKARAM CRABDAAG PARASITE!!!

Nehru

All the PNC defense attorneys will be out soon to defend this.  Izzz the PPP fault!!!   Can you imagine the once head of a military is the President of a country and these prisoners escaped twice!!!!  And the police running after them with a stick!!!

With so many criminals on the loose would Granger continue with his controversial policy of pardoning a minimum of 60 criminals each year?

This is the Pardon.  Let them out all at once so that no one can criticize him again.

Asking the army to catch these criminals is like asking Basil Williams to turn in the video tape of the robbery and murder at the Buxton Gas Station many years ago.

They should have been placed in a secure location under the GDF in the first place instead of Lusignan.

Ramjattan should do the nation a favor and resign.  Appoint Nehru instead.  From the comfort and safety from under his bed in Richman hill, he has all the answers to Guyana ills and woes.

Lusignan 13 escaped via tunnel – Ramjattan

-remainder of high-risk prisoners for Camp St brick prison.

July 24, 2017 Source

Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan  says that 13 prisoners who escaped from the Lusignan facility today did so by digging a tunnel into the backlands.

In a statement, he also said that the remainder of the high-risk prisoners who were being kept in a Lusignan pasture will be transferred today to the brick prison at the former Camp Street jail.

The full statement by the Minister follows:

Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan.

STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT & MINISTER OF PUBLIC SECURITY

HON. KHEMRAJ RAMJATTAN

Monday, July 24, 2017

Since the July 9th prison fire our country has been going through trying times. After another painful and unfortunate development at Lusignan last night, we have suffered another setback.

President David Granger this morning called a special emergency meeting of the National Security Committee at the Joint Service Operations Centre following the escape of thirteen prisoners from the original holding area at the Lusignan Prison. That meeting just concluded.

His Excellency was briefed by the Heads of Services that at about 7 hours today, during a routine count, it was determined that 13 prisoners were unaccounted for. Further checks revealed that a tunnel was dug and tracks were found leading towards the Lusignan Backlands.

The massive Joint Services Operations codenamed ‘Clean Sweep’ has been intensified to recapture these 13 fugitives plus the other four who escaped from the Camp Street Prison.

There are 17 fugitives at large and I ask for your full cooperation in their recapture. Wanted bulletins have been issued and the harbouring of these criminals is a serious offence and anyone found to be assisting them will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

There will be increased joint services presence on the East Coast and East Bank Demerara corridors, inclusive of road blocks and security checks. This may result in some inconvenience to the public. We ask for your patience at this time.

There were 99 inmates in total, in the holding area. The remaining 86 will be transferred today, to the Brick Prison at Camp Street which has been sufficiently completed to securely hold these prisoners.

There will be increased security both at Lusignan and Camp St, inclusive of improvements of the security infrastructure, more perimeter patrols, surveillance lights and cameras and continued clearing of the surrounding areas. There will also be increased security checks on all prisoners throughout the day.

Once again we apologise to the public for the inconvenience which this massive joint services manhunt will result in.

The security services are utilizing every means and resource at their disposal to recapture the fugitives. This relentless pursuit and unrelenting effort will stop at nothing until every single one of these fugitives is recaptured.

I urge you again to report all relevant information to the police and this will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.

Thank you.

It seems that there has been a lack of supervision of the prisoners in that a tunnel was built without any knowledge of its happening.

Awaiting for the "next shoe to drop".

The ones who committed murder should be shot while trying to escape. Save the taxpayers some money and from the look of the current situation, give the police a little less to worry about and handle.

Why Rumjaat still employed. Is it difficult to find an X army person to replace him .how many chances should he be given. He is a total failure because of him the entire country is living in fear.
