The 44-year-old has made it clear that he does not endorse the PPP and is standing behind A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance for Change (AFC) coalition.
Last Monday, an article appeared in state-owned Guyana Chronicle stating that the former World Boxing Champion told them that he endorses the PPP and has joined the party to “knock out the coalition”.
The article recorded Lewis as saying the PPP is a “people-oriented party,” and had disclosed that it has always been for him, “and he will never turn his back on the ruling administration.”
The article claimed, too, that Lewis said he is not too familiar with the leaders of the Alliance, and said from all indications; they appear to be opportunists and not suitable people to lead the country.
These pronouncements by the state media did not sit well with Lewis who came from his East Bank Demerara residence to the Kaieteur News Saffon Street, Charlestown Office last evening to set the record straight.
Lewis told this publication that last Sunday he was in Albouystown around 21:00 hours with some friends when he heard that the party was having a public meeting in the area.
The 44-year-old said he went there and merely shook hands with Presidential Advisor, Gail Teixeira; the party’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee; party supporter, Manzoor Nadir and some other party members.
Lewis told Kaieteur News that he was approached by a Guyana Chronicle reporter who asked what he thought about the elections. The boxer said, considering that he was in the PPP camp, he opted for a diplomatic response and had reportedly responded “it would be close.”
The former heavyweight champion told Kaieteur News that during the encounter he noticed several photographs being taken. “The next day, I hear I am in the PPP.”
Lewis said, “I don’t know you can take my picture and say I endorse a party just so. This is a scandal, a lie. I am with the APNU+AFC coalition. They have lied on me making I look like I disrespect people who look up to me.”
“No. I can’t do that…People are saying people in Guyana suffering, people getting killed and I’m going with the PPP. It’s not true. “
He said that he needed to “clear his name.” (Sunita Samaroo)
