The PPP dullards love to argue about the virtues of their Robin Hood Roger Khan, what they fail to recognize and comprehend is the far reaching consequences of hiring a known prolific drug trafficker to be their Judge Jury and Executioner. More than a decade later what we have witnessed is that the armed forces has become a training ground for future criminals.

Many of the PPP soup lickers will argue this was the case during PNC rule, they are wrong and mistaken. Both the Army and police still had semblances of professionalism in them and that is why the transition from PNC to PPP governments went relatively smooth. Janet was able to keep Laurie Lewis and also retain Joe Singh and others.

This army however is reeling from criminality year over year. The Coast Guard seems to be most affected by this, their ranks seem more likely to become violent criminals, see the case of 10 year old Ricky Jainarine that was murdered along with his father and neighbour. The case of Delve Kant Ramdass is another these 2 cases of course are related.

The case of David Clarke the known drug trafficker who was intwined with the Roger Khan network is another glaring and obvious example.

The PPP has created a mess in Guyana there is no doubt about that.

Now let me give Gold Smith Baboo and some of the other dunces a bit of advice don't reply to me and expose how dumb you are. I know its tough to think before you type but please I beg you........save it.

Bandit dies, partner hurt after being run over during getaway

Posted By Staff Writer On November 19, 2014 @ 5:30 am In Local News | No Comments

A bandit is dead and his alleged accomplice is in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after they were run over shortly after robbing a woman of a quantity of cash at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara yesterday.

Dead is Trelon Munroe, of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam, while his accused partner was identified as Kevin David, of Agricola, an AWOL coast guard rank.

Crime Chief Leslie James told Stabroek News that sometime around 12:30pm, Jasdai Persaud and her husband went to a city bank and withdrew $750,000 before returning home. The money was reportedly to be used for home repairs.

On their arrival at their Cherry Field, LBI home, Persaud’s husband left briefly and it was while the man was away that a black CG motorcycle with two men pulled up in front of the house. The pillion driver, James said, got off the cycle and entered the Persaud’s yard. There, he held Persaud at gunpoint and demanded the recently withdrawn money from her.

The woman acquiesced and the bandit attempted to return to the waiting motorcycle. However, he was confronted by Persaud’s husband, who had returned. The two men became embroiled in a scuffle for the bag of money and the bandit discharged a single round.

Fortunately, Persaud’s husband was not hit but the bandit used the momentary pause to escape the man’s grip. The bandit returned to his pillion seat on the waiting cycle and sped off with his accomplice. However, a nearby relative of Persaud gave chase in a car. According to James, there was a collision between the two vehicles and the two bandits fell off.

NEW GPC cleared for continued exports to US

Posted By Staff Writer On November 19, 2014 @ 5:18 am In Local News | No Comments

The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) recently completed a current Good Manufactur-ing Practices (cGMP) inspection of the NEW GPC INC. facility located on the East Bank of Demerara which extended its clearance to export pharmaceuticals to the US.

A release from NEW GPC on Saturday said that the inspection occurred from September 1 to September 4, 2014. The release said that NEW GPC INC. currently exports Over-the-Counter (OTC) drug products and Dietary Supplements to the United States.

The US FDA periodically inspects foreign companies that export to the United States to assure compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21, Parts 111, 210 and 211, the release said.

Dear Editor,

According to an INews report on November 17, 2014, Commander of ‘A’ Division, Mr Hicken reportedly made a statement to the effect suggesting that women and girls must ensure they do not dress in any manner that “plays into the agenda” of a rapist.

As women associated Citizens against Rape (CAR), we publically call out the Commander and any other leaders who hold this view. The age old argument about women getting raped because of how they look and dress needs to be firmly put to rest, especially by those who are entrusted to protect us women and children (and yes, men do get raped too).

Let us share some startling facts.

Myth 1: Women who were raped, ‘asked for it,’ especially by the way they dressed.

Fact 1: A woman’s body belongs to her and her only; she only can give consent, and deny access! It matters not how she dresses, behaves or looks.

Myth 2: Women are usually raped by someone unknown to them (strangers).

Fact 2: Studies all over the world have shown that victims of rape are most often raped by someone they know and trust, usually a friend or family member. The figure is a staggering – over 80 per cent. We repeat this for clarity. Over 80 per cent of rape victims are abused by someone they know personally. And to clarify as well that in discussions with rape victims the majority are fully clad at the time the rape was attempted/committed.

Myth 3: Women tempt men to rape.

It is sickening that Hicken is not aware that rape has nothing to do with what the victim is wearing

Dear Editor

Many men and women in Guyana probably think like Commander Hicken does, that young women are to be blamed for rape because they do not dress ‘morally’. Victim-blaming for rape is part of the culture and many persons, especially supposedly religious people, do the victim-blaming in outright terms, or like to talk a lot about ‘modest’ attire even if they acknowledge as Mr Hicken does, that rape is a crime.

It is sickening that Mr Hicken is not aware that rape has nothing to do with what the victim is wearing, or where they were walking or who they decided to fall in love with or where they decided to go or who their relatives decided to bring into their homes.

Mr Hicken must go if he believes that young women (including girls in school uniform, young women in work clothes, nurse’s uniform, hijab, their home clothes at home) are to be blamed for rape. Mr Hicken must go if he does not believe and cannot communicate clearly to his officers and to the public that the responsibility for rape lies with rapists.   Mr Hicken must go if he seems not to believe in the spirit of the new Sexual Offences Act.

Mr Hicken must go if he does not realise that many rape survivors have walked away from seeking justice because the police and the justice system blamed them.

Those who believe that survivors are to be blamed should not be investigating rape. There was a recommendation made to the Disciplined Services Commission to have specialized units staffed by persons who had the appropriate attitudes, skills and knowledge to deal with matters relating to sexual violence and domestic violence.

The talk of police reform has clearly fallen on deaf ears if senior officers believe that children are responsible for the rape brought on them because of the way they dress. Minister Rohee must go too if he does not hold himself, or Mr Hicken accountable for ensuring that the Guyana Police Force will not be judging survivors of rape as they seek justice.

Yours faithfully,

Rape is not a crime of passion or temptation but of humiliation and hate

Posted By Staff Writer On November 19, 2014 @ 5:05 am In Letters | No Comments

Dear Editor,

The remarks attributed to Police Commander ‘A’ Division, Mr Hicken, demonstrate once again the urgent need for the implementation of the Sexual Offences Act 2010. For Mr Hicken to suggest that how women dress may be a trigger for rape indicates a serious failure in the training which has purportedly been done with the police. The inclination to blame the victim is a weak and lazy response to a serious crime, and it is unacceptable as a response of the police – moreso a senior policeman – tasked with investigating these offences. We must have a police force that understands the underpinning of all forms of gender-based violence, that understands that rape is not a crime of passion or temptation, but of humiliation and hate. The police must be trained to really appreciate their role as protectors of the vulnerable. They cannot act on this responsibility if they are limited by the belief that the victim of a crime such as rape must somehow have contributed to that victimization.

Red Thread acknowledges the swift and appropriate response of APNU to Mr Hicken’s remarks and urges that they maintain this focus on the so-called ‘soft’ issue of gender-based violence plaguing the society. The protection of women and the vulnerable in the society should not be relegated to the bottom of the list of issues needing urgent action. We further urge those individuals who habitually question why group A or group B has not commented on an issue they identify as major to join the call for more and better training and supervision of the Guyana Police Force, including not just about legal specifics, but about the attitudes and behaviour expected of officers.

Mr Hicken must withdraw his remarks, and the Commissioner of Police must urgently organize the ongoing training of all ranks to ensure that the enforcers of the law are not hampered by views such as those expressed by the Commander.

Yours faithfully,
Wintress White
