This is what the PhD in economics entails (American PhD).

  1. Sixty credit of course work (20 courses)...usually takes about 2.5 years to complete.
  2. Upon completing those 20 courses one would have completed a level of maths proficiency equivalent to at least a bachelor’s (or like a master’s) in mathematics.
  3. Write two comprehensive 4 hour exams – one in core theory: microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics and the second in two subjects of specialization.
  4. Present an oral defense of original dissertation proposal in front of committee. We are now in year three.
  5. Write/research dissertation. The topic must be original and must make a contribution to literature. Quality must be at the level of getting two to three peer-reviewed publications.
  6. Defend the dissertation in front of committee. Success here means one gets the degree. We are now in year 5.

The purpose of a PhD is not to seek status or to get Dr in front of one’s name. It is meant for pursuing a research career. If one is not interested in research do not complete this degree as it is very intense and difficult. If one is good the status will automatically follow. The requirements above also hold for physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, etc, with some variation.
