HINDIFILMS CLASSICS:

Suraiya made her debut as a child artist in Usne Kya Socha (1937). She got a prominent role as a child artist with the help of her uncle Zahoor, who was then a popular villain actor. During a holiday from school in 1941, she accompanied him to Mohan Studios to see the shooting of the film Taj Mahal which was being directed by Nanubhai Vakil. Vakil noticed Suraiya and not having in his mind at that time any particular young girl to play the role of young Mumtaz Mahal in Taj mahal, selected Suraiya to play that role.[4].

Music director Naushad once heard Suraiya's voice on All India Radio while she sang for a children's program, and chose her to sing as a 13 year old for Mehtaab in Kardar's film Sharda (1942).

As an adult, Suraiya initially played secondary roles in K. Asif's Phool (1944), Mehboob Khan's Anmol Ghadi (1946), which was written by Aghajani Kashmeri also Kashmiri, and Dard (1947). She got a break as a heroine for the film Tadbir (1945) at the recommendation of K. L. Saigal, who liked her voice during a rehearsal. She went on to costar with Saigal in Omar Khayyam (1946) and Parwana (1947).Although by then she had a couple of hit songs, but the four solo songs which she sang in Parwana made her a genuine singer star. She considered Composer of these songs, Khawaja Khurshid Anwar as her favorite Music Director for whom she sang just thirteen songs during 1943 to 1949. More opportunities arose for Suraiya after reigning actresses Noor Jehan and Khursheed Bano migrated to Pakistan following the 1947 partition of British India.

As an actress, Suraiya had an edge over her contemporaries Kamini Kaushal and Nargis because she could sing her own songs. After three hits Pyar Ki Jeet (1948), Badi Bahen, and Dillagi (1949), she became the highest paid female star. But her reign at the top was brief; her films started flopping in the 1950s. She made a comeback in Waaris and Mirza Ghalib (1954). Rustom Sohrab (1963) was her last film.

1) AAH KO CHAHIYE EK ASAR HONE TAK:

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you
Kaun jiitaa hai terii zulf ke sar hone tak
Who is going to live long enough to understand my sad condition

(Aashiqii sabrtalab aur tamannaa betaab)2
Love asks for patience, but the desires are impatient
(Dil kaa kyaa rang karuun Khuune jigar hone tak)2
Tell me which color should I color this heart, while
waiting for you to break it

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Ham ne maanaa ke tagaaful na karoge lekin)2
I understand that you are not indifferent to my feelings of love
Khaak ho jaayenge ham (tumako Khabar hone tak)3
But I will turn into ashes (die) by the time you get a wind of my feelings

(Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak)2
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

(Gamehastii kaa 'Asad' kis se ho juz marg ilaaj)2
Asad, the sorrows of my life, can be cured by none other than death
(Shamm'a har rang men jalatii hai sahar hone tak)2
After all the candles burns under all circumstances till the dawn

Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak
It will take a lifetime for my sadness to have an effect on you

5) DIL-E-NADAAN TUJHE HUWA KAY HAIN:

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

(Hum hain mushtaaq aur woh beyzaar,)2
We are impatient, and he is disgusted
Ya-Ilaahi yeh maajra kya hai
Oh God!, what is the matter out here

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(Main bhi muh mein zabaan rakhtaa hoon)2
I too have a tongue in my mouth
Kaash pooche ke mudda'aa kya hai
If only I was asked about my view

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(Ham ko unse wafaa ki hai ummeed)
I have hopes of faithfulness from her,
Jo nahi jaante wafa kya hai
Who knows not what faithfulness is

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?

(jan tum par nisar karta hun)2
I would give my life for you
main nahi janta dua kya hai
But I don't know how to verbally offer prayer for you

Dile naadan tujhe hua kya hai
Oh my naive heart, what has befallen you?
Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai
After all, what is the remedy for this pain?

Hindi Screen Legend and Singer:
Suraiya first met Dev Anand in 1948, when she was just 19 years old. They were co-starring in the film Vidya and on the second day itself cupid struck. And when Dev saved her from drowning during the filming of the song `Kinare Kinare Chale Jayenge', Suraiya was convinced that she had met her cosmic mate. But her Nani thought otherwise. She banned meeting, telephone calls and even talking on the sets. The entire affair was conducted in a clandestine manner with friends like Durga Khote and Kamini Kaushal going out of their way to engineer secret rendezvous. On the sets of the film Jeet, Dev Anand finally proposed to Suraiya and gave her a diamond ring worth Rs 3,000 -- a princely sum for a fledgling star. But even that memento was snatched away from her when her grandmother saw the ring and threw it away into the sea. She also burnt all of Dev Anand's letters in front of Suraiya's eyes. Her objection to the romance: Dev Anand was a Hindu. A hunt for a Muslim husband began but marriage was not in Suraiya's fate. In 1951, Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartik -- ending one of the silver screen's greatest romances.

As time goes by, she neither gives interviews nor makes public appearances. The walls and mirrors of Krishna Mahal flat on Marine Drive, are the only objects that set their eyes on this star of yesteryears. But she broke her self-imposed exile when she made a rare appearance at the Screen Videocon awards when Sunil Dutt presented her the Lifetime Achievement award. Radiant in a white salwar kameez she carried herself with the grace of a much younger woman.

The gentle sway of her hips spoke of her delicate style of dancing. The only thing that had remained completely unchanged was her voice. Tremulous with emotion, Suraiya's voice was choked with emotion when she took her award.

She spoke of her long association with the film world and she was deeply touched that audiences still remembered her. But when Javed Jaffery pressed her to sing or just hum -- she refused. As a star she still remembers the meaning of letting a legend live. Heroines are captured forever on the silver screen and the public's memory must never be updated.

She retired from films after giving her greatest hit "Mirza Ghalib" and the great hits "Dile Nadan Tujhe Hua Kya Hei" and "Yeh Na Thi Hamari Kismat". This prompted Pundit Nehru to pay her the ultimate compliment by telling her that she had brought Mirza Ghalib to life-"Tumne Mirza Ghalib ki ruh ko zinda kar diya!"

Suraiya preferred to lead a very private life after winning laurels for her last film and passed away in January 2004 after a brief illness.

THE CLASSICS: PLAY ON

Our next featured artiste, is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India. Lata Mangeshkar's career started in 1942 and has spanned over six and a half decades. She has recorded songs for over a thousand Bollywood movies and has sung songs in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages, but primarily in Hindi. She is the elder sister of Asha Bhosle and brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar and sisters Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar. She is the second vocalist ever to have received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

In 1942, when Mangeshkar was 13, her father died of heart disease. Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), the owner of Navyug Chitrapat movie company and a close friend of the Mangeshkar family, took care of them. He helped Lata get started in a career as a singer and actress.

Following the partition of India in 1947, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan Bhendibazaarwale migrated to newly formed Pakistan, so Mangeshkar started to learn classical music under Amanat Khan Devaswale. Pandit Tulsidas Sharma, a pupil of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, also trained her.

Initially, Mangeshkar is said to have imitated Noor Jehan, but later she developed her own style of singing. Lyrics of songs in Hindi movies are primarily composed by Urdu poets and contain a higher proportion of Urdu words, including the dialogue. Actor Dilip Kumar once made a mildly disapproving remark about Mangeshkar's Maharashtrian accent while singing Hindi/Urdu songs; so for a period of time, Lata took lessons in Urdu from an Urdu teacher named Shafi.

“Aayega Aanewaala,” a song in the popular movie Mahal (1949) was composed by music director Khemchand Prakash and lip-synced on screen by actress Madhubala became very popular and it was said that Aayega Aanewaala along with a few other hits placed Lata Mangeskkar right up there.

1) AAYEGA AAYEGA AANEWALE

Khaamosh hai zamaanaa, chup chup hain sitaare
The world is still, the stars are quiet
Aaraam se hai duniyaa, bekal hai dil ke maare
The world is content, but the lovers are restless
Aise mein koii aahat, is tarah aa rahii hai
In this stillness, I am startled with a subtle sound
Jaise ki chal rahaa hai, man mein koii hamaare
It seems that some one is walking within my heart
Yaa dil dhadak rahaa hai, ik aas ke sahaare
Or is it the sound of my heartbeat, which is beating in hope that

Aayega aayega aayega
some one will come
Aayega aane waala, aayega aayega aayega
the one who must come, (my lover) will come

(Deepak bagair kaise parwaane jal rahe hain)2
How is it that moths are burning without a flame
(how does one feel restless without a reason)

(Koi nahin chalata, aur teer chal rahe hain)2
Eventhough no one is throwing the arrows, I can feel the pain
(How does one feel the pain of seperation without a lover)

(Tadpega koi kab tak beaas besahaare)2
How long should a helpless person suffer without a hope?
Lekin yeh keh rahe hain dil ke mere ishaare
But my hearts believes that

Aayega aayega aayega
The one I want is on its way
Aayega aane waala, aayega aayega aayega
the one who must come, (my lover) will come

(Bhatakthi hui jawaani manzil ko dhoondti hai)2
this beauty is desolate and wandering, looking for her destination
(Maajhi bagair nayya sahil ko dhoondti hai)2
Like a boat without a boatman is looking for the shore
(Kya jaane dil ki kashti kab tak lage kinaare)2
Who knows when the heart/boat will find the shore( my lover)
Lekin yeh keh rahe hain dil ke mere ishaare
But my heart believes that

Aayega aayega aayega
some one will come
Aayega aane waala, aayega aayega aayega aayega
the one who must come will come.

(Mehafil mein jal uthi shamaa)2 paravaane ke liye
In a gathering she burns for her admirer like the deadly flame for the moth
prit bani hain duniya men, mar jaane ke liye )2
Same way, in this world, love is created to die.

chaaron taraf lagaae phere, phir bhi haradam dur rahe
the moth revolves around the flame, but never gets close enough
ulfat dekho aag bani hai, milane se majabuur rahe
Love is like fire, unable to let the two lovers meet
(yahi sazaa hain duniya men,)2 divaane ke liye
this is the way the world punishes the ones who love
prit bani hain duniya men, mar jaane ke liye

marane ka hai naam muhabat, jalane ka hai naam javaani
Another name for death is love, another name for youth is pain
patthar dil hain sunane vaale, kahane vaalaa aankh ka pani
the heart is like stone and the lovers tears are falling on the stone
(aansuu aaye aankhon men)2 gir jaane ke liye
The tears come into the eyes to fall

Mushkil hai bahut mushkil (chaahat ka bhula dena)2
It is really difficult to forget your love

TALAT MAHMOOD

The 50's was the era of the Singing Star. America had Elvis Presley, England had Cliff Richard and India had Talat Mahmood ! Handsome, good looking men with fantastic voices and a distinguished style of singing that was all their own. The mere mention of their names on the silver screen was enough to pull in female crowds looking for gentle romantic fare, with clean cut story lines. Whether Elvis, Cliff or Talat, these singers were packaged and presented on the silver screen with the utmost of care. Nothing was left to chance. For them, it was nothing but the biggest producers, the biggest banners, the topmost heroines and of course, hand picked music composers to create those scintillating musical scores !

Talat apprenticed classical music under Pandit S.C.R. Bhat at Morris Music College some time in the 30s. He started his career purely as a ghazal singer in 1939. Talat Mahmood began his singing career at the age of 16 in 1939 when he began singing the Ghazals of Daag, Mir, Jigar etc. on All India Radio, Lucknow. his voice had a quality distinct from all the other singers. HMV was quick to notice this and offered talat his first disc in 1941 "sab din ek samaan nahin tha, ban jaoonga kya se kya main, iska to kuch dhyan nahin tha". indeed how prophetic were these words. little did talat know that he was soon to rise to become the greatest names in Ghazals on the Indian Sub-continent!.

Tasveer banata hoon, tasveer nahiin banatii
I am drawing your picture, but it does not work
Ek khwaab saa dekhaa hai, taabiir nahiin banatii
The dream I saw, it refuses to become reality

Bedard mohabbat kaa itanaa saa hain afasaanaa
The story of this cruel love is not long
Nazaron se milii nazare, main ho gaya diiwaanaa
Your eyes met mine, and I went crazy
Ab dil ke bahalane kii, tadbiir nahiin banatii
Now there appears to be no way to appease my heart

Dam bhar ke liye merii duniyaan mein chale aao
Come into my world for just a moment
Tarasii huyii aakhon ko phir shakl dikhaa jaao
Show your face once more to my longing eyes
Mujh se to merii bigadii takadiir nahiin banatii

Na tujhse gila koyi hamko na koyi shikaayat duniya se
I don't have to blame you no complaints to the world
(Do chaar kadam jab manzil thi)2 Qismat ne thhokar khaayi hai
When the destination was four steps away fate has pushed me

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

Ek aisi aag lagi man mein jeene bhi na de marne bhi na de
Some type of fire was lit in my heart it won't let me live, it won't let me die
(Chup hu to kaleja jalta hai)2 Bolu to teri ruswaayi hai
If I am silent, my chest burns if I talk, then it will be your disgrace

Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
Desires kindle in the heart

3) MERI YAAD MEIN TUM NA AANSOO BAHANA

Meri yaad mein tum na, aansoo bahaana
Do not shed tears when thinking of me
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
Do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me
Samajhna ke tha ek, sapna suhaana
Just think that it was all only a beautiful dream
Woh guzra zamaana, mujhe bhool jaana
Those days gone by, just forget me.

Meri yaad mein
When you think of me

(Juda meri manzil, juda teri raahen)2
Your destiny is yours, my road is elsewhere
Milengi na ab teri meri nigaahen
Your eyes will no longer meet mine
Mujhe teri duniya se, hai door jaana
I have to go far away from your world
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
Do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me

Meri yaad mein
When you think of me

(Yeh ro ro ke kehta hai, toota hua dil)2
Crying all the while, my broken heart says
Nahin hoon main teri mohabbat ke kaabil
I am not worthy of your love
Mera naam tak apne, lab pe na laana
Do not even bring my name to your lips
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
Do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me

Meri yaad mein tum na, aansoo bahaana
Do not shed tears when thinking of me
Na jee ko jalaana, mujhe bhool jaana
Do not kindle the flame in your heart, just forget me

Meri yaad mein
When you think of me

NB: This song “meri yaad me tum na aansoo bahana” is easily a timeless classic. The singing of Talat Mahmood and the music of Madan Mohan were both outstanding, but let us not forget the lyrics of Raja Mehdi Ali Khan which enabled Madan Mohan and Talat Mahmood to create this magical gem.

A song for the lover who has been jilted or parted way because of unforseen circumstances, a story remembered, that maybe will brought out the hand kerchief.

Great Poetry by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.
