There is a serial port connection for the GPS but many laptops don't have serial ports, so you would have to get a serial port to usb adapter to connect the GPS to your laptop. it is possible to build one...i heard.

i want to be able to download my jogging routes and will also use it in the forest when i go there.

i have map info 8 and have access to arc view, i can steal a few base maps be able to teach myself GIS skills.
