A couple of months ago ( October), we were in the wilderness of Utah mountain  biking. It is a forbidding landscape, hot, sticky and an unforgiving place if one is caught unprepared.

My friend fell and the entire sole of his mountain biking shoe got ripped off because he could not get it out of the clips. Usually the shoe comes off but I guess the velcro on his were really snug. There we were with some 10 miles of wicked terrain to hike since  he could not keep his foot on the pedals. I guy came by and he had some duct tape but that was not enough to really ride hard. We later met a couple and the girl had all purpose glue! Between the Duct tape and the glue he had a perfect shoe for riding and  we were fine.

My point of the story is, how prepared are we for disaster in our pampered urban lifestyles? That girl had all sorts of stuff in her bag to last she said 5 days if they got into trouble. They were on a day hike. We did not even have enough water to last beyond our ride. That got me to thinking a lot about how unprepared we are for emergencies.

How many of us are prepared to survive for five days if the lights go out or if you are caught in a snow storm. Last year we were caught in a snow storm on the highway and could not move for 6 hours. Luckily we had lots of gas, and was in a monster SUV so it was like being at home inside. I wish we had a couple of blankets or a sleeping bag and some real food instead of candy bars  but we were fine and had net access.  I know folks in those tiny cars caught hell. I think I will look at being better prepared for emergencies in the new year.

My sister has a few stores like REI ( minus the bike part) and sells survival gear as well. I cannot put her store site here least some nutcase decide to go in and hurt her on my account. Recently we have been talking a lot because she is enthralled in my newly discovered  interest in her work and was quite helpful. It peaked my interest and thought how useful these information and supplies can be for our people at home. This would be a growth business in GY

Here is a site I found useful when I was doing my research. http://survival.outdoorlife.com/. They have lots of tips and gear.  They also have lots of guns but I am not into guns. I am interested in emergency survival during a hike or bike ride or road trip and not prepping for Armageddon.

This is indeed a serious thread and one would hope that some of you contribute to what would one day save your lives. For example, how many of you have a bug out bag as Anta proposed above?

If your house is on fire are all your important papers in one location so you can grab and run or do you have them in a fireproof safe? How many of you have a battery operated radio or Famiily walkie talkie in the house? Worse, how many of you can find your way around if you got lost in the woods, trapped in a snow storm etc?

Every year, hundreds of people die on our highways because they forget to keep a blanket and some safety lights, or back up in their cars. Many are missing for days before a family member even know they are lost. Last year a girl was trapped in her car for days on her way to school and no one knew she was lost until she was found almost dead. Get real.

These are serious issues we need to concern ourselves with. Look at how those people suffered because of Hurricane Sandy. Many of them had no fall back plan even though the saw the storm coming for days. Nature is merciless if you are caught unawares.

The least any of you should have in your house if you live in standalone homes is a back up generator, wood, a wood stove etc.  back up water. You live in the cold north! You car should always have extra blankets, a battery backup..( they are only 200 and can boost the car, and a hand/electric pump with tire plugs and some flares). If you take road trip, all the time you should have a complete survival kit as Anta list  has above with you.
