SUPERSTAR OF TOMORROW: RANBIR KAPOOR

Before starting off his career as an actor, Kapoor worked as an assistant to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, where he was involved in the making of the film Black (2005). Kapoor later made his acting debut in November 2007 with Bhansali's Saawariya opposite newcomer Sonam Kapoor. The film failed to do well at the box office, though his performance was largely appreciated. Kapoor was then seen in Siddharth Anand's romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) alongside Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone. The film performed reasonably well at the box office.

SUPERSTAR OF TOMORROW: RANBIR KAPOOR

Kapoor's first release of 2009 was Ayan Mukerji's Wake Up Sid, in which he portrayed the character of Siddharth Mehra, a spoiled and self-centered college student from Mumbai. Featured opposite Konkona Sen Sharma, the film was a critical and commercial success, and Kapoor earned several nominations for Best Actor at various award ceremonies. He next starred alongside Katrina Kaif in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, which surfaced as one of the biggest hits of the year. Following this, Kapoor appeared in Shimit Amin's drama Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year. Upon release, the film received positive reviews by critics but failed to do well. Kapoor's performance was critically acclaimed, with one critic writing, "Ranbir brings to his part a whole lot of earnestness and heart. His natural and utterly contagious exuberance so much on display in his last two films Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is effortlessly curbed here."

His future projects include Prakash Jha's Rajneeti, co-starring Ajay Devgan and Katrina Kaif, and Siddharth Anand's Anjaana Anjaani with Priyanka Chopra.

Ranbir Kapoor all set to join the Bollywood brawn brigade!
December 14, 2009

With hits like ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ and ‘Rocket Singh’, Ranbir Kapoor has arrived with a bang as the dashing actor gets catapulted into the league of B-town superstars!

Done with playing the boy-next-door roles, this mushy actor has finally set his eyes on ‘coming of age’ roles and will be leaving his scrawny image for a brawny one.

It is believed that the actor is contemplating developing a sinewy physique for upcoming projects.

Ranbir wants to go for mature roles and therefore wants to flaunt a well sculpted hot body, much like his contemporaries.

Grapevine has that Siddharth Anand’s ‘Anjana Anjani’ and Imtiaz Ali’s next flick requires a strong image.

Talking to a news daily, a source said, "Both the characters require Ranbir to play a man and not a boy. In all his films so far he has played a boy just stepping into maturity and facing the hardships of life.

In ‘Anjana Anjani’ he plays a man on the move and must match his physical appearance with Priyanka Chopra who’s chronologically older than Ranbir and therefore automatically perceived to be older than him by the audience.”

As for Imtiaz Ali’s flick, for the first time Ranbir will portray the character of an intense lover. Of late, the actor is busy pumping iron to build a fantabulous body as Ranbir himself confirms, “Yes I am beefing up my physique for next year. Change is good, don’t you think?”

Ranbir, Katrina will win National Awards for Raajneeti - Prakash Jha
January 27, 2010

"This film will take Ranbir to another level," said Jha. He has cast the actor as US-educated scion of a political dynasty who has to reluctantly return home to shoulder his family's duties.

"I hope, no, I'm in fact pretty certain, he'll win the National Award for his performance," Jha told us. "Katrina has breathed fire and passion into her role.

From the way she metamorphoses from a young vivacious girl to the way she walks to give her public speeches as a politician.

Audiences won't be able to believe the transformation of Katrina. I won't be surprised if both Ranbir and Katrina win National Awards," he added.

He can't stop preening over the fact that his 'Raajneeti' features the maximum number of National Award winners in its cast, Arjun Rampal being the latest.

"Everyone is outstanding in the film. And why not? I've a line-up of National Award winners in the cast - from Naseeruddin Shah and Nana Patekar to Manoj Bajpai and Ajay Devgn.

"When I heard Arjun had won the National Award for 'Rock On!', I was ecstatic. He is fantastic in my film." Jha claims 'Raajneeti' is the biggest multi-starrer. "I think it'd be impossible to get so many stars under one roof for any other director."

Ranbir-Priyanka ice-skating in New York
February 8, 2010

It was meant to be Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor ice-skating together at the Central Park in New York for Anjaana Anjaani â€Ķthe first film couple since John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in 2001’s Serendipity to get the privilege of being captured on camera gliding on ice at that location. Alas, filmmaker proposes. Actress disposes. Priyanka had to return to India for four days to promote her new film Pyaar Impossible. The field, rather the icing rink, was left clear for Ranbir Kapoor who for three consecutive nights skated non-stop all night in Central Park. Not just that Ranbir spent all of the New Year weekend in New York learning how to skate. Says producer Sajid Nadiadwala, “Ranbir’s dedication to get it absolutely right just took our breath away. He is relentless in focusing on getting it right. He had to skate alone because Priyanka had to return to Mumbai. He skated for three nights from 11 pm to 4 am in minus-6 degree temperature in Central Park.”

It was important to can all the footage in those three nights. Says Sajid, “We were the first film unit since ‘Serendipity’ to get permission to shoot in Central Park’s icing rink and we had limited time. But the weather was freezing. We were worried how we’d manage it. We underestimated Ranbir’s passion for excellence. He skated non-stop all night for three nights.”It was only after those three nights of super-frozen weather conditions that Ranbir finally fell on his bed with utter exhaustion. He’s gradually recovering from the marathon ice-sport. Says Sajid, “The footage we’ve captured of Ranbir ice-skating shows his ballet-like elegance and precision. I don’t think we’ve ever got anything like this before.

What are the advantages of having filmy background?

Ranbir Kapoor: It is written for us. I would have been difficult if I were not from Kapoor family. But there are disadvantages too. The expectations are huge on us. The old adage – Rise is higher, fall is harder – applies to us.

Sonam Kapoor: If I were not the daughter of Anil Kapoor, I would not have got this opportunity. It would have been very difficult.

Did you undergo any professional training?

Sonam Kapoor: I had been working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the past four years in the direction department. Working with SLB is like going to college and learning things.
Ranbir Kapoor: I did an acting course in a film school, New York. But what I learnt from Sanjay Leela Bhansali while working for him is much more valuable than I what I learnt at film school.

Why did you choose Sanjay Leela Bhansali for your first film?

Sonam Kapoor: I did not choose him. He chose me. He is my favorite director and the best filmmaker in the entire India. I never expected him to pick me up as heroine for this film.

While singing, he makes friends with Gulabji (Rani Mukherji), a prostitute. Knowing what Gulabji does, Raj still treats her in friendly manner. When Raj tells Gulabji that he needs somewhere to stay, Gulabji tells Raj that there is only one woman who'll give him a place to stay and that is Lilian (Zohra Sehgal), and she will only let those who she likes stay. Raj decides to meet her the next morning. Raj meets Lilian and they have a very emotional chat, during which Lillian reveals she has a son who left many years ago and never returned. Finally, she agrees to let Raj stay with her because he reminds her of her son. Raj goes out for a walk in the night and meets a mystery girl dressed in black and holding a umbrella. Raj tries to talk to her, but she runs away and Raj starts to follow her. Getting the wrong impression, the girl shouts at Raj and tells him to go away. Raj tells her that he will go away, but asks what she will do if a man with bad intentions starts to follow her. Then, as predicted by Raj, a drunken man begins to follow her and Raj saves the girl from him. Raj insists for her to allow him to take her home. The girl agrees and lets Raj take her home. Raj discovers that the name of the mysterious girl is Sakina (Sonam Kapoor), and that night Raj falls in love with her. After thinking about her whole night, Raj decides to tell Sakina he loves her. When he calls to her the next night-after resigning from his job so he can see her-Sakina ignores and refuses to speak to him. Raj gets angry with her, but the pair reconcile and he takes her to his favorite place, on the top of city clock building. Before he can tell that he loves her, Sakina reveals to Raj that she is in love with someone else. Sakina says that his name is Imaan (Salman Khan), and explains to him how she fell in love with Imaan when he lived at her house. Although Raj now knows that Sakina doesn’t love him, he is ready to help her anyhow. He comes to believe that there is no Imaan. He asks his friend Gulabji for advice and she advises him to tell Sakina how he feels. Soon, he decides to propose to Sakina on the night of Eid. He takes Sakina to RK bar and sings his favorite song for her. Sakina remembers that it’s the time to meet Imaan at the bridge she runs away from Raj. Following her, Raj tells her that there is no Imaan but she hurts Raj, telling him to let her go. Raj goes to Gulabji, saying he wants to be with her for the night, insulting her. Deeply hurt, she throws Raj out of the brothel onto the street, where he is beaten up by a few men. He comes back to the place where Sakina is waiting. Now Sakina is also sure that there is no chance of Imaan coming back so she decides to be with Raj as she now knows how much Raj loves her. Raj tries to make Sakina happy and succeeds and they enjoy the snow that has begun to fall. When they are going back to home, they pass the bridge where they met and see Imaan waiting for Sakina. Torn between the two, she decides to go with Imaan and leaves Raj alone. He retreats into a side street and to the sweet memories of Sakina.
