If Skeldon factory doesn’t work sugar is dead – Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo has warned that if his government’s much-vaunted US$200M Skeldon sugar factory doesn’t succeed …”well the sugar industry is dead”.

It was the starkest warning yet by the Head of State on the Chinese-built factory which has lurched from one crisis to the next and is not working anywhere near to capacity.

Jagdeo was speaking at the commissioning of the Guyana Water Inc. $1.4 billion water treatment plant in Corriverton, Berbice on Thursday. He lamented that the Skeldon Factory was not delivering the expected results and as a result the sugar industry is in trouble.

“This is a US$200 million facility… unfortunately, it’s not delivering the results we expected it to,” Jagdeo said.  “They have too many mistakes going on there and I intend to fix it…it has to change,” he said. “We’re not going to make that sort of investment to have a few people mess it up,” he stated. “So even if it means personally I have to get involved, I will get involved to ensure that it is fixed…that it’s delivering the kind of results that it should deliver so that we can safeguard the sugar industry,” he stated

What was the outcome of his personal involvement? How much money did he make out of it?

2011 elections resulted in the PPP not having a majority in parliament and therefore he was unable to allocate funds to solve the problems of Skeldon. Thanks to the AFC. The more things change the more things go backward.

This is hilarious. NOW he is going to get personally involved and fix the mistakes. “We’re not going to make that sort of investment to have a few people mess it up,” . So pre-Granger, Skeldon was state of the art and producing at capacity.

Right... that would have saved Guyana's sugar industry.

Stop lying. The sugar industry was being bailed out to the tune of billions every year without any objection from the opposition.

Oi Billy just say Oops, I forgot.

Arguments on sugar will go on forever if sugar is allowed to die. I have read an article where DDL finally decided to get into the action and I agree they should. Unfortunately the Skeldon million dollar scrap metal did not help the industry, Guyana was screwed by the Chinese and unfortunately the present government seem to not learn from this.

On another note I really cannot see why sugar is dying as we are being bombarded with other options which seem much worse for us. If we do our homework we will also find sugar is not the main cause of diabetes.
