Mighty Sparrow For NYC's South Street Seaport Today

The Mighty Sparrow

Hardbeatnews, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. June 12, 2007: Trinidad & Tobago's nine-time Carnival Road March champion, Mighty Sparrow, is among the top Caribbean artists set to thrill New Yorkers at Piers 16 and 17 this afternoon.

The performances are part of the annual Caribbean Fair at the South Street Seaport, held annually as part of Caribbean Week in New York. Sponsored by CaribVision TV, from 6 – 9 p.m. on Piers 16 and 17, the singers are set to take the temperature in the Big Apple up a notch higher.

Other performances are set to come from Jamaican reggae artist Ky-Enie, DJs Ladies Rebelution Dance, and MTV Europe award-winning dancehall artist Dollarman, whose contributions to the hit single "Rock the Party" helped propel the song into the Top 10 on Billboard's dance music chart.

"Caribbean music has had an immense influence on American pop culture and can be heard emanating from radio stations and concert venues all over the country, from the salsa-meringue dance floors of Miami to the reggae-infused nightclubs right here on Manhattan's West Side," said Hugh Riley, one of Caribbean Week's main organizers. "CaribVision TV recognizes the power of Caribbean music to unite as well as to entertain, so we are happy with their decision to sponsor this important event during Caribbean Week in New York. The concert will be a celebration of music and culture in true Caribbean fashion."

Dollarman originally hails from Grenada as does the Mighty Sparrow. Ky-Enie is an up-and-coming artist who has received massive international attention since two of his songs were featured on the soundtrack of "Shottas," a Jamaican film starring Kymani Marley, Spragga Benz and Wyclef Jean.

Ladies Rebelution Dance is a collective of female reggae sound system DJs from a variety of backgrounds, including Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica and New York City.

While the Caribbean Concert is not set to begin until 6 pm on June 12, the sights and sounds of the Caribbean will be seen and heard throughout the Seaport from 11 a.m. this morning, when the Caribbean Fair & Vacation Mart officially opens with approximately 70 booths manned by representatives from Caribbean destinations. Consumers will have the opportunity to purchase specially-priced Caribbean vacation packages from accredited travel professionals.
