I AM caught in two worlds regarding the now over-publicised Sharma issue. In many ways, I am quite happy that President Jagdeo made a slight adjustment to the suspension imposed on CNS Channel Six. The suspended sentence will not reduce the severity of Mr. Sharma’s blunder, but it will quell the negative and complaining voices of all those who were saying that the suspension was a political move from the PPP/C’s quarters. The sentence will now take effect on December 1, 2011. However, I sometimes wish that the law had been applied without mercy, since Sharma is bereft of respect and dignity.
President Bharrat Jagdeo explained at the PPP/C Kitty campaign rally that his decision was made to “take away any excuse they (opposition members) have to create violence and enmity, or to boycott the elections.”
This was what the trouble makers were up to. It was really a case of looking for excuses, since the opposition parties, singly or collectively, have not been able to gather any kind of momentum, nor inspire any kind of meaningful followers.
According to the President, who is also the minister with portfolio responsibility for information, the temporary waiving of the suspension, for two months, will now be resumed on December 1, but with the full duration.
This move I find to be quite mature. It also suggests great confidence where the PPP/C is concerned. President Jagdeo has shown great maturity and temperance here. He has the authority to act, but he chose to put aside that legitimate power and act in a very peaceful and nationalistic way.
When the ban took effect on October 3, a few vigils and public meetings were held at various places. By the way, these meetings had a very unpleasant tone to it. Protesters were bent on being quite noisy, aggressive, sarcastic and critical. The opposition members all proffered silly reasons for the act of discipline. People quickly forgot how Mr. Sharma committed similar offences in the past. President Jagdeo is the guardian of this nation, and even though he acted wisely and in the best interest of the country, he was being criticized. The Sharma folly was very incendiary in nature.
In closing, I am glad over all that the matter is now in a state of peace. For the Opposition parties, there is now no excuse regarding a blockade for their campaigning. To me, Sharma does not even know that he is being used. These very ‘overnight followers’ will now go back and laugh at him. That is what they were doing in the first place.
