Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt:

says to go to jail without a fight

MUMBAI,  (Reuters) – Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt said today that he will return to jail for his conviction linked to the 1993 Mumbai bombings, giving up a long-running legal battle for his freedom.

The high-earning actor has been on bail since 2007 when he appealed against an original sentence of six years for the illegal possession of weapons in a case linked to the attacks that killed 257 people.

Last week India’s Supreme Court rejected his final appeal against his conviction but reduced his sentence to five years and ordered him to return to custody within four weeks.

Dutt, 53, said he would no longer fight and would not try to seek a pardon.

“Right now I am a shattered man, my family is shattered,” an emotional Dutt told reporters in Mumbai, breaking down and hugging his sister, Priya, who sat beside him.

“I am not going for pardon, there is no debate about it .. The honourable Supreme Court has given me time to surrender and I will surrender at that time.”

Dutt had already spent 18 months in prison before being released on bail so he is expected to serve another 3.5 years.

Dutt was the most high-profile of 100 people involved in the Mumbai bombings trial which ended with 12 people receiving the death penalty and 20 others given life sentences.

In 2007, he was cleared of conspiracy charges in the attacks but found guilty of illegal possession of an AK-56 rifle and a pistol which he claimed were to protect him and his family during a period of rioting in Mumbai.

The court’s five-year sentence handed down last week prompted a debate on whether the actor was judged too harshly, with many in the Bollywood film industry and Press Council of India chief Markandey Katju calling for him to be pardoned.

Projects worth more than 2.5 billion rupees ($46 million) and the fate of various Bollywood movies hang in the balance with Dutt heading back to jail.

The actor has four films in the pipeline, including “Peekay”, “Policegiri”, “Unglee” and a remake of “Zanjeer”.

Dutt, popular for his role as a do-good gangster in the “Munnabhai” films, requested the media and well-wishers to leave him “in peace” in his final days before returning to prison.

“I have a lot of work, I have to finish all that work. I have to spend all this time with my family, so I, with folded hands, tell you all that just let me be in peace till the time I go in,” he said.

Very good movies by Sanjay Dutt

We haven’t seen all movies that Sanjay Dutthas acted in, so here is a list of the Best Movies of Sanjay Dutt (Top 10) in the last couple of decades or so.

Sanjay, who made his debut in Rocky, is one of the more under-rated actors in Bollywood today. But what did justice to his otherwise average career, was two of his biggest blockbuster this decade which were critically acclaimed and box office monsters. The Munnabhai series is what Sanjay Dutt will be remembered for and ironically most of his career best performances have been as a Don.

NEHRUBHAI, FIVE YEARS, SOME WOULD THINK THAT HE GOT OFF VERY LIGHT: WHILS'T SOME WOULD THINK THAT NOT SO FAST CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN BECAUSE more than 2.5 billion rupees ($46 million) and the fate of various Bollywood movies hang in the balance with Dutt heading back to jail.

So it is a no win situation, with the 1.5 years already spend in jail, he will have to spend another 3.5 years more and maybe he will get some time off for good behavior, another three years more should cool him down a bit.

Actor Sanjay Dutt, who has been sentenced to five years in jail in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, has assured the makers of his three under-production films - Zanjeer, Policegiri and Peekay - that he will complete the projects before he is imprisoned. Read: Rajinikanth disturbed over verdict on Sanjay Dutt

The Supreme Court last week upheld Sanjay Dutt's conviction under the Arms Act for illegally possessing weapons, and sent him to five years' imprisonment. The 53-year-old has already spent 18 months in jail. He was convicted by the TADA court for illegal possession of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle.

Despite the trauma that Sanjay Dutt is going through, he met the filmmakers at his residence in Pali Hill and assured them that he will complete their projects. A friend of the actor, who spent the entire day and night at the Dutts' residence, said: "Yes, Sanju Sir has made a commitment. Zanjeer requires three more days, Rajkumar Hirani's Peekay requires seven more days and Policegiri needs 17 days to be completed."

"In spite of the shock that he went through on (March 21) Thursday (of hearing the honourable Supreme Court's verdict), Sanju Sir assured the Zanjeer director Apoorva Lakhia, Peekay maker Rajkumar Hirani and the Policegiri producer T.P.Aggarwal that their films would be completed. Sanju Sir told them, 'Boss, let's complete the shooting and my dubbing. Pataa nahin aage kya hoga (Who knows what will happen in future)'." Sanjay Dutt is expected to get started on the projects this week, as he has been asked by the Supreme Court to surrender within four weeks of the verdict.

"The commitment stunned all of us," said the friend.

A source said, "Actually, the enormity of the court verdict didn't sink in to Sanju sir on Thursday. All day and night we surrounded him and kept him busy. TP Aggarwal even fed Sanju Sir biryani with his own hands. We kept the atmosphere in his house very very light."

"Guests kept dropping in. All his friends were there. Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar came towards evening. We all narrated anecdotes from Sanju sir's wild days to Ranbir since he wasn't even born in Sanju sir's Rocky days." Pics: Salman Khan visits Sanjay Dutt

However, Sanjay Dutt's wife Maanyata was extremely upset.

"She was inconsolable. She put up a brave front, but she kept breaking down throughout the day. It's a shocker for the entire family. Sanju sir hasn't even begun to understand what this means. We are all hoping for a miracle," added the source.

MADHURI AND SANJAY DUTT

Madhuri and Sanjay were a stunning couple and filmmakers loved to cast them together. In the 90s, both Madhuri and Sanjay were extremely successful and good looking couple. Films like Khal Nayak (1993), Saajan (1991), Kanoon Apna Apna (1989) and Sahibaan (1993) were proof of their amazing onscreen chemistry

BOLLYWOOD STANDS BY SANJAY DUTT

jaya-pradaa.jpgJaya Prada: Sanjay Dutt is innocent. It is very unfortunate. Knowingly or unknowingly, it has been written in his fate that he has to struggle like this. Particularly for Sanjay Dutt, if you see the background of his family. His father Sunil Dutt served a lot for the country, and even in politics he had a very good name. And knowing his nature and character as a great father, and his son, he also innocently may be has done something. I bow to the court's decision, but Sanjay Dutt is very close to my heart. We worked together in so many films. Today, is a very sad day for me.
