Migrant crisis: Clashes as Macedonia erects fence

Macedonian soldiers are raising a fence on the country's southern border with Greece to try to manage the flow of migrants better.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says 105,000 migrants have passed through Macedonia after arriving in Greece this month.

But many people are now stuck trying to enter Macedonia after Balkan countries imposed tougher entry conditions.

Clashes have occurred in recent days, with more violence on Saturday.

The BBC's Balkans correspondent Guy De Launey said the new fence, which does not cover the entire Greek border, is a way for Macedonia to direct migrants towards official crossings.

More than 720,000 migrants - mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan - have arrived in Greece so far this year, according to the IOM.

That is why I don't like this migrant situation. People should migrate to a place because of what they like about it. That sentiment can be determined during normal immigration processes. That is not possible when there is a refugee crises and people with bad intentions slip through the cracks. I am more in favor of destroying the evil elements in the middle east and if necessary, set up a system of compliance even if forced until the people over there learn to live amongst each other and by extension amongst other people of the world. The current Middle East situation is going to end only one way. That is the complete destruction of that region. They should be thankful even if their savior turn out to be an 'infidel' because we have already realized that they cannot save themselves from themselves and hopefully they too get to realize that.

We have a lot of Somalis refugees. They are constantly trying to go to Syria. Some small towns chase them out by not hiring any Somali. They know how to work the welfare system too.

Everybody knows how to work the welfare system. We saw a story of a well off Guyanese woman in Queens having to pay back nearly 100k for working the welfare system. I hope me and my family never have to work it.

Many level headed leaders across the world including the late Pope John Paul advised against invading independent countries, Bush & Blair did not listen.

I agree but right now Bush and Blair are enjoying their retirement while the Middle East is spiraling out of control. I am of the opinion that the cannot save themselves. Just ask Sagga bai. He will tell you that the Apocalypse has begun.

I have been here for 45 years and have never applied for any public assistance. I have too much pride to stand in a line for handout when I am capable of working. That is why I say regardless of the job you do, at least you are making an honest living.

This one of the best statements I have heard on GNI this year. Fair, Balanced and to the point.

I presume you say these things to make yourself feel good. Well, sorry dream on.

No, as a stark contrast of attitudes. Skeldon man willingly deprive himself of benefits to which he is entitled just so there is enough for people like  you and caribj in the hour of need.

We are headed for an apocalyptic war in the ME.  It will be Russia/Iran/Shias Christians, etc on one side and the US/Israel and the allies of the terrorists House of Saud on the other.  Nato will find themselves split on this!

If it makes you feel good...believe what you must. It would not be different for your own imaginings of the glorious life. Some live it, others like you dream of it.

I do not know Caribj but I am sure he is sufficiently of a grounding to secure his life and not imagine it. I guess you and and your little school teacher white lady, my namesake by the way, can hack it, so can he.
