#11 DEVDAS 2002

THE STORY:

Sir Narayan Mukherjee (Vijay Crishna), a zamindar, and his wife Kaushalya (Smita Jaykar) have heard that their younger son, Devdas (Shahrukh Khan), is coming home from a law school in England to their mansion in Tal Sonapur, Bengal. On the day of his return, Kaushalya insists everyone in the family close their eyes so that she will be the first person to see him. Her plan backfires, however, when instead of coming straight home, Devdas goes to see Parvati "Paro" Chakraborty (Aishwarya Rai), his childhood sweetheart, first. This incident ignites Kaushalya's dislike of Paro.

Paro is Devdas's neighbour and childhood friend. The years apart turned their friendship into love. When he was sent to England at the age of ten, she lit a lamp for him, which she carefully tended to over the years and never allowed to extinguish. At first, when Devdas comes to her house to see her for the first time in ten years, Paro is shy and runs to her room. A bee flies in and Paro, who is frightened of bees, tries to swat it away with a sheet. This turns into a sort of dance and Devdas opens the door to her room as she is swirling around with the sheet. Paro collapses on the bed, hiding her face from Dev. They have a short chat (during which Dev catches the offending bee) but Dev leaves and Paro reveals to her mother that she wants Dev to see her adult face by moonlight. Later that evening, Devdas is walking outside when he sees Paro, who has fallen asleep in her courtyard, her lamp by her side. Dev sits by her for a while, stunned by her beauty, before teasingly placing a dot of soot from the lamp on her lip and leaving. Paro wakes and sees the door to his house swing shut and falls back to sleep, smiling.

It seems to everyone, including Paro's mother Sumitra (Kirron Kher), that Devdas and Paro will get married, but Devdas's vindictive sister-in-law Kumud (Ananya Khare) reminds Kaushalya of Paro's maternal lineage, from a family of performing artists. This is considered inappropriate for an alliance with the Mukherjee family. Kumud and Kaushalya underhandedly plan for Paro to marry an old man and trick Sumitra into thinking Paro's bridegroom will be Dev. When Sumitra announces her desire for Devdas and Paro to marry, Kaushalya rejects and humiliates her in public. In retaliation, Sumitra vows to ensure that Paro will get an even better marriage, and soon arranges for Paro to marry Thakur Bhuvan Chaudhry (Vijayendra Ghatge), a forty-year-old widowed aristocrat with three grown children.

Devdas gets into a fight with his father about his relationship with Paro, and flees to a brothel with his college friend Chunnibabu (Jackie Shroff). He leaves a letter for Paro, stating that love had never existed between them. At the brothel, Devdas meets a good-hearted tawaif (courtesan) named Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit), who falls in love with him. Soon, Devdas realizes his error.

Meanwhile, as he is leaving, Sumitra makes Paro swear that if Dev leaves without her she will marry whomever she tells her to. When he leaves Paro is hurt and angry and agrees with her mother.

Devdas returns to Paro at the time of her wedding to Bhuvan Chaudhry and asks her to elope with him. Paro refuses, remembering the way he had discarded her so easily. Dev, in a brief moment of anger and hurt, strikes Paro with a pearl necklace and marking her forehead with a small cut. Sobbing, Dev leads Paro to her bridal procession and Paro, still holding her lamp, breaks into sobs as she is carried away. Back in the brothel, Chandramukhi waits for Dev, refusing to dance until he arrives. An impatient patron, Kalibabu offers her a set of new dancing bells, but to no avail. Kalibabu and Chandramukhi make a bet: if Dev does not appear before a certain candle burns out, Chandramukhi will dance, but if he comes before the candle burns out, Kalibabu will leave the brothel wearing the dancing bells (an insult). Just as the candle burns out, Devdas appears and Chandramukhi dances happily. But for Devdas, having lost both Paro's and his family's love is too much and he is heartbroken. He becomes very drunk as Chanrdamukhi dances. He moves to Chandramukhi's brothel permanently and becomes an alcoholic. Eventually, he becomes so ill that the slightest dose of alcohol could kill him. Chandramukhi, who cares deeply for Devdas, tries to get Paro to convince him to stop drinking; Paro attempts to persuade him, but she does not succeed. However, Devdas promises Paro that before he dies, he will come to her doorstep one last time.

Paro invites Chandramukhi, whom she has befriended, to a celebration of Durga Puja at her husband's home and introduces Chandramukhi to her in-laws without revealing her profession. However, Bhuvan's ill-natured son-in-law who turns out to be Kalibabu (Milind Gunaji), who was banned from Chandramukhi's brothel and who made inappropriate advances towards Paro, reveals her background and humiliates her in front of Bhuvan and the guests. He also tells Bhuvan of Paro's relationship with Devdas. As a result, Bhuvan punishes Paro by permanently forbidding her from leaving the mansion.

Devdas, who had never before let Chandramukhi touch him, finally tells her that he loves her, but that she must let him go. He decides to travel the country, and takes Dharamdas (Tiku Talsania), a trusted servant, with him. While on a train, he meets his old friend Chunnibabu, who offers him a glass of wine. Devdas initially refuses but when Chunnibabu, (who doesn't know about his fatal condition) says he should do it for friendship's sake, he drinks it knowing it would be fatal.

On the verge of death, Devdas remembers his promise to see Paro one last time. He travels to her house, collapsing in front of the main gate. Paro learns of his presence, and, screaming his name, runs out of the house and attempts to reach him. Bhuvan, probably thinking she is going to escape for her lover, sees this and orders the servants to close the gates. Devdas sees a blurred image of Paro running to him, but the gates close before she can reach him and Devdas dies. At the same time, the lamp that Paro had lit for him flickers out. The screen goes black as Devdas lies dead in front of the mansion as Paro sobs, heartbroken.

#13 MAINE PYAR KIYA: 1989

THE STORY:

Although they have been friends for years, Karan and Kishan have grown apart and have little in common. The widower Karan is a poor engineer who lives in a humble house in the country. Kishan is a rich man with a vast business empire with little time for old friends. However, when Karan prepares to work abroad, he turns to Kishan to solve a problem. Will Kishan let Karan's daughter Suman (Bhagyashree) stay at his house? Kishan cannot turn down his old friend's request and Suman comes to live with Kishan's family.

At first country girl Suman is ill at ease in the huge mansion. She is befriended by Kishan's son Prem (Salman Khan), who assures her that he has no romantic interest in her and that a boy and a girl can be platonic friends. The pair share outings and confidences and all seems to be going well.

Then Prem takes Suman to a party put on by some of his rich friends. They humiliate Suman and accuse her of scheming to marry Prem. Suman leaves in tears and distances herself from Prem. At that point, Prem suddenly realizes that he has fallen in love with her. With aid of his mother (who likes the unassuming Suman) and his comic friend Manohar, Prem sets out to win Suman's heart.

He succeeds, but their romance is balked by Prem's father Kishan, who does not want his son to marry a poor nobody. He prepares to send Suman home in disgrace. At this unpropitious moment, Karan returns from overseas. Kishan accuses him of plotting to match Prem and Suman. Karan and Kishan quarrel; Karan and Suman then return to their village.

Prem refuses to accept the separation. He defies his father and is disinherited. He goes to Suman's village and begs to be allowed to marry her. Karan, angered by Kishan's accusations, says that he will allow the marriage on one condition: Prem must prove that he can support a wife by his own efforts.

Karan, meanwhile, takes back Suman home and the daughter sulks till Prem acts as a rescuer. But since Prem is now disinherited, Karan puts forward the condition that Prem should earn two thousand rupees within a month to prove that he can take care of Suman. Prem then works as a truck driver and laborer. At the end of the month, while Prem is ready with the required money and comes to win the heart of his lady's father, This melts Karan's heart, and he agrees to letting Suman marry Karan. By the end of the movie, the estrangement between Karan and Kishan ends too.

THE STORY:

Sundar (Raj Kapoor), Gopal (Rajendra Kumar) and Radha (Vyjayantimala) have been friends since childhood. As they grow into adults, Sundar develops an obsessive romantic attraction to Radha, but she prefers Gopal, who is also in love with her. Yet, as Sundar has confided his feelings for Radha to him, Gopal decides to sacrifice his love for his friend’s sake. Radha systematically resists Sundar’s overtures, but to no avail. For him, she is the only woman in the world. Matching Sundar’s great love for Radha is his unswerving devotion to his friendship with Gopal.

Eventually, Sundar enlists in the Indian Air Force and is assigned to a military mission in Kashmir. Before leaving, he extracts a promise from Gopal, whom he trusts implicitly, never to let any man come between Radha and himself while he is away. Subsequently, Sundar’s airplane is shot down over Kashmir. He is listed as MIA and presumed dead. This news saddens Radha and Gopal, but they are nonetheless now finally free to profess their love for one another. Among other expressions of love, Gopal writes her an unsigned prem patra (love letter) which touches her particularly and which she hides away. Just when they begin taking steps to be married, Sundar suddenly returns, safe and sound. The self-effacing Gopal sacrifices himself once more, stepping back into the shadows, watching as the reborn Sundar resumes his wooing of Radha. Inevitably, the two marry.

After the couple returns from an extended European honeymoon, Sundar is deliriously happy. His life’s dream has been realised. Radha is resolved to be faithful to her husband and to put Gopal out of her mind. She privately asks him to stay away from her and Sundar because of the torture his presence causes her. Sundar’s devotion to Gopal, however, is such that he constantly tries to draw him into their life and activities, much to Radha’s chagrin. The perfection of their marital bliss is however shattered when Sundar accidentally discovers the unsigned love letter Gopal had written to Radha. Sundar is thunderstruck, and assumes that Radha has been unfaithful to him. Producing a pistol, he demands she divulge the name of the supposed lover and threatens to kill the man, but she refuses.

In the days that follow, Sundar becomes obsessed with discovering the identity of the anonymous letter-writer and cannot return to normalcy. Radha’s life becomes pure misery, lived out against the incessant drama of Sundar’s jealousy, threats, anger and fixation with the letter. Eventually unable to bear the wretchedness of her existence with Sundar any further, Radha leaves their house and flees to Gopal for help. Sundar takes the same route, unaware that Radha has gone to Gopal’s house. There, matters come to a head. The overwrought Gopal admits his authorship of the infamous letter to Radha, an admission which almost destroys his friend. Gopal, perceiving no exit from the impasse at which the three have arrived, kills himself with Sundar’s pistol. Radha and Sundar are finally reunited - in mourning.

THE STORY:

Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) and the tomboy Anjali (Kajol) are students at St. Xavier's College. They are the best of friends. One day Tina (Rani Mukerji), the principal's daughter, enrolls at St. Xavier's. She had come from London and she was beautiful, feminine, and sophisticated; she was the antithesis of Anjali. Rahul falls hard for Tina as soon as he meets her, which was just the time that Anjali realized that she has some feelings for Rahul, probably prompted by a careless comment on his part that she had heard, which equated love with friendship. This creates a romance triangle. One day, Rahul confesses his love for Tina to Anjali. Anjali leaves college suddenly, and she never calls or writes.

Tina and Rahul marry and have a daughter, whom Tina names Anjali. Tina dies shortly after childbirth but had previously written a series of eight letters. Every year, on Anjali's birthday, she is given a letter and hears her mother's loving wishes for her. In the eighth and last letter, the little girl is told about her namesake. Where Rahul had been blind, Tina had noticed the older Anjali's emotions and pitied her deeply. Because Rahul hasn't remarried, perhaps his first love could be the mother that the young Anjali needs and wants.

Young Anjali believes that the older Anjali can make her beloved father happy again, and decides to help her father reclaim his lost paramour. She soon recruits her doting grandmother (Rahul's mother, played by Farida Jalal) and grandfather (Tina's father, played by Anupam Kher) as accomplices.

The unlikely conspirators locate Rahul's old friend and contrive to make Rahul and Anjali meet again. They meet in a camp where young Anjali had enrolled because her namesake is a counselor there. The namesake discovers, without the younger girl's knowledge, the truth of her new charge's parentage. Rahul soon finds old feelings reviving. However, Anjali has bowed to her family's wishes and is engaged to another man, Aman (played by Salman Khan). She will not break the engagement because Rahul refuses to confess his love to her. Complications ensue, but all ends well as Aman steps aside to let the fated couple marry at last.

# 18: AMAR PREM 1971:

THE STORY:

Shakti Samanta's intelligent melodrama about the themes of maternal love, prostitution and the relation between humanity and divinity is set in the slums of Calcutta, he treats matrimony and maternal love as a great tribute to womanhood and as such a truly sincere artistic passion evolves without any artifice, he adds a wistful beauty to the bare sequences without stripping the enchanting leading lady, Sharmila Tagore as the barren, divorcee, forced into the world of demi monde for existence.

She is an exploited victim but at the same time the strongest feminine character i have seen in cinema as she brings a reality to her role from her youthful beauty to an old wrinkled woman, while RAJESH KHANNA is at his best as the filthy rich ,discontent ,alcoholic neglected entrepreneur by his wife who seeks solace in her arms, their informal and traditional relationship is bound beautifully by a child who lives in the notorious neighbourhood who shares the human bondage of universal love that has no language but only expression, that is established here is as sacred holy triad and the trio help to make one of the most memorable movies in cinema.

The soulful dialogues might be hampered by the subtitles but the expressionist technique employed will help the viewer who is unable to comprehend the wistful whimsical beauty of the language itself.

R.D burman, Kishore and Anand Bakshi give their most soulful score ever, and the streets of kolkatta are captured in stark reality by the camera which is observing the lives of ordinary people from every walk of life in casually skilled perfection.

The finale is emotionally stunning and brings a lump to my throat everytime, and I have seen it quite a few times, art meets the parameters of commercial cinema in all its glory and redeems the indian woman as the weakling feminist she is usually portrayed as without sensationalism or cheap hysterical melodrama.
